2005 V8 = WD hitch from the factory, correct?
no, its got a receiver. the WD hitch is what you slide into it, and hook the trailer to.

Whose truck is doing the towing? If it's your truck you have to consider the wear and tear from the tow, not just the cost of gas.I'm not trying to make excuses or anything. I'm just stating my scenarios and situation. It's my brothers truck and I'm not paying for gas.

It takes roughly $65 to fill up the 4Runner and I'm gonna guess around 10mpg in the runner. That puts me at 200 miles at empty. Up there is gonna be 3-4 fill ups. That puts me at $260 in gas one way. Coming back I might average 12-13 just pulling 1500 lbs (trailer). So less fill ups coming back.
You sound pretty determined to go with Plan Alpha. Please report back to let us know how the tow went. :hello:Which is expensive and I'm not buying one until I get a pull behind camper.

Gotcha. That would seem to present a slight problem to driving it there. It would be cheaper for him to fly here and drive it home, EXCEPT, here's the kicker, it needs the whole front end rebuilt, minus front diff, before he can drive it that distance.
I did a test run tonight, loaded how I wanted it, and it tracked straight, with wind blowing from my front right. I might do a small adjustment tomorrow to get more weight on the front tires. The only issue I had was the trailer brakes grabbing too hard too soon! Had to back them off a little bit. I was also running the speed that I would on the interstate, 60-65mph.
I'm not sure why everyone thought this was such a horrible idea. Glad to hear its working out and that you're getting pretty decent gas mileage all things considered.
I am also surprised everyone was so concerned, the 4runner v8 has a solid amount of HP and TQ, 4 wheel disc brakes, and a wd hitch. I tow a 23ft wake board boat, loaded with gear frequently, so some where around 6k lbs.
I'm not going to brag about mpg but I feel safe and stable even at highway speed.
