Towing and regearing???

Hey guys,

Im about to pull the trigger on 4.88 gears. Reason behind this is because i have 33s with stock gears. Pretty sluggish so i definitely need to get new gears. I dont have any armor but i will be towing a 3500lb boat+trailer. I tow my previous boat (which weighs a lot less) up to big bear lake which is at an elevation of 7000-8000ft.

Question is will 4.88s work or should i be moving to 5.29s?
i will be towing 2-3 times month and want to make sure i have enough power to do it. Thanks in advance!

I think 4.88s is probably overkill, let alone 5.29s on 33s.

You must be torque hungry, shit I live at 9000ft and have 33s and armored and I'm not bothered. Granted I don't tow a trailer over 1000lbs ever haha

It's pretty sluggish going up hills right now without towing. I think to even attempt to tow my boat up would be pointless. What solutions do I have?

I think 4.88's would be ok but your gas will suffer since you're going to be daily driving it with only 33's and no additional weight most the time. You'll definitely get some pep back in your step but you'll be running at higher RPM's. 5.29's are definitely out of the question. There are 4.56's but I feel like they're such a waste of money personally. But if you never plan on adding additional weight in accessories to your rig then maybe a nice tune up and some 4.56's would work best.

I run 4.88's with 35's and a bunch of added weight and I'm probably close to stock if not a little on the sluggish end. I'm use to it though b/c our trucks are by no means fast. That's what my daily driven car is for :D

without plugging numbers into the gear calculator, I would guess the 4:88's would put you pretty close to the stock ratio.

Thanks for the help guys, my main goal is to get some power back going up hill on/off highway. Gas mileage right now isn't great, but wouldn't wsnt to loose a whole lot more.

I'm under the impression now that those with 3" lifts and 33's stay with stock gears? I noticed the sluggishness right after the 33's were installed. I've even considered going back to stock tire size so I can feel more comfortable towing my new parker...

I might be more lost now than I did in the beginning haha thanks again guys.

People only stay with stock gears on 33's because they aren't completely unbearable and nobody wants to spend the money on something that isn't completely necessary.

IMO, if you're spending a lot of time on the freeway going 75+, go with 4.56's, that'll keep the RPM's down, but if you're okay topping out at around 65ish, 4.88's will be great.

But do plug all the specs into a gear calculator, you can get accurate RPM readings for the speed you're going, and see what you think would work best for you.

Is a supercharger out of the question? I know it's more money, but seems like it would solve the problem and not kill your gas mileage.
