Towing question

I have a 2000 SR85 4runner V6 4WD. It has 169000 mi. and going strong. I have never towed with it but would like to get a small tent trailer. The trailer dry unit weight is 2214 and I figure 800 lbs will cover cargo, water, etc. Everything I read tells me this will work, but I don't want to get into it and find I need a V8. Can you help?

I've got a '97 V6 that I tow the race car with. It's a 2200# car on a 1100# trailer. I load the inside with my track goodies and she still hauls like a champ! I keep my distance since brake zones are way increased, but aside from that, she's good. Make sure to keep OD off so it won't keep switching gears up and down on you and you should be good.

It'll tow it just fine. It will be slow thru high altitude mountains but you will get there.

I moved to newfoundland from ontario (approx 2600kms) and towed my entire life behind my 2000 limited 4Runner 227,000km original shocks and struts, over 4000lbs total weight of the trailer and about 700-800lbs in the truck including myself and the wifey. She pulled everything with no issues, the first day we did 17hrs pretty much just stopping for gas, the tranny shifted normal the entire way. No issues at all. I'd tow all day with it.

The 4runner will get it moving just fine but the trailer better have it's own brakes. I would not trust the crappy ass 4runner brakes to stop anything over a ton.

I own a '96 4Runner and I tow a pop-up camper probably like what you're looking at. It's roughly 2500 lbs also and I can pull it through the mountains here in Colorado without problems (some slow-downs up the steep hills, but I still make it!). However, my camper didn't come with trailer brakes and comign down some of those steep hills scared the crap out of me knowing that if I need to stop I would have a hard time doing so.

Definitely look into the Tundra Brake mod (see my signature). It has made a HUGE difference when towing and braking with my trailer, and saved me from a near accident too. I can't say enough good things about the mod!

So, in summary the 4Runner can definitely pull a 1 ton trailer just fine.
