Were you in neutral and stopped? Truck needs to be in N and stopped for 4L to engage.

Yeah, it was stopped completely. I know the drill. I actually did tow my boat with it. Felt ok, but I am still thinking of buying a large truck. Short wheel base could become an issue, and with surge brakes on my trailer I cannot use most of sway control systems. Still undecided.

Well, I did the unthinkable.....I traded the 4Runner on a '05 Dodge 3500 Diesel (not dually) to better tow the trailer. I must say the Dodge is a very nice truck, but I will definitely miss the 4Runner. Wife wouldn't let me explore it's real off-road capabilities anyway

I'll still be reading the forums here and hope maybe to have another Runner in the future.

I ended up buying GMC Suburban 2500 with 454 engine. But I kept my 4Runner. Suburban does the job, but 4Runner was doing it just as well. The difference is a larger wheel base and more towing capacity (10000 lb on mine). I also got equilizer hitch, it makes a big difference. And having 9 seats in Suburban is a plus!

No, not many I am getting around 12 mpg. It has 44 gal fuel tank and it can last for 400+ miles, so it seams like a normal car until you have to fill it $120 worth of gas. But towing uphill you can see the needle move! 5 mpg I guess

I would guess less than that, honestly....

I've gotten down as low as 7mpg out of the 4Runner towing a very tall enclosed trailer weighing about 2800lbs.

How tall is "very tall"? I'm looking to be an enclosed trailer to tow my track motorcycle around and was planning on getting one I could stand up in...I'm about 6'3".

Do you have a nose cone or other aerodynamic device on your trailer?
