I am an original owner of a 2005 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V8 2WD (59,000 miles). 5 days ago I started the car to find that multiple lights on the dash are lit. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed a P1442 error. They said they need to change all 3 secondary air injection valves and the pump assembly. Estimated a cost of $3500. I called Toyota and they said they do not have extended warranty on the 4Runner even though it is a common problem in the V8 engine. Extended warranty was only on the Tacoma and Sequoia models. Researching on the internet I found an article that said something about the gas cap. So I opened that cap and cleaned it around the o ring. When I started it the next time the lights disappeared. I am not sure if that was a coincidence or had something to so with it. Its been 2 days now and the lights are gone. Does anyone have an idea of what the heck is happening here? Any comments would be appreciated, thanks.

gas cap is not one and the same.
Lights are back on. This is a defect in the Engine.

The extended warranty on the Secondary Air Injection system is only on the V8 Tundra's and Sequoia's currently. Nothing you can do about it right now unfortunately until they decide to do something. If your engine blew and you have 80k miles and no warranty, it's just bad luck.
The $4000 does seem a bit higher than others have reported paying though however for this repair.

Bad luck really? Until now at least for me Toyota meant quality and not to encounter 'Bad Luck' issues. The dealer assured me that there is a known issue in the engine and Toyota is just not accepting it for the 4Runner. I want to know WHY? I didn't pay any less money because it was a 4Runner?

It's not the engine itself. It's a emission air pump issue. Either debris gets into the pump and pump blades break up and end up in the solenoids. Or moisture gets in and the solenoids corrode.
Toyota is still a very reliable company. Trust me, I work on them every day. But every manufacturer is going to have some issues here and there that people deal with every day. At least Toyota is examining this issue right now, and may issue something for it eventually, or they may not.

It seems like everyone knows why this issue arises except for Toyota as they are not taking any responsibility for the defect. I was told that there was nothing as a preventative I could have done to avoid this. Also you call this 'some issue', really !! Spending $4000 only a car that has only 59,000 miles and valued at $12,000 seems normal to you ? And by the way I know someone who did exactly what I am trying to do on Facebook with the exact same issue as me, after there was enough damage done, Toyota called him and took care of the problem. Also I know at least 2 people who will not consider a Toyota for their upcoming purchase after reading my post. Question: if this is an emissions issue only then why did the dealer tell me that I should not be driving it the way it is?

Toyota has a warranty for a reason. That's why they give you the option to buy an extended warranty. You didn't, and unfortunately this happened. Hence why I called it bad luck. I've seen transmissions go out at 70k miles. Nothing can be done sometimes to prevent it.
As far as the dealer, they want your money so they tell you it's not safe to drive. I already told you that the price they quoted you is much higher than others have reported paying on this board for this repair.

My point was that when we buy Honda's and Toyota's we don't think about getting extended warranty because the perception is that the cars are rock solid. Apparently this is not the case for Toyota as their quality is slipping. Like you mentioned, you are seeing transmission issues at 70K miles, which speaks for the quality that is being rolled out. If Toyota does not take responsibility for what they are producing they have surely lost me as a customer and I will continue to go out of my way to disclose what happened with me and how Toyota dropped the ball. They released a TSB about this. Still only covered up until 5 year/60k miles warranty in the US. Not sure of elsewhere.

That's your own fabrication so speak for yourself. All mechanical things are prone to failure....anyways you should be able to source the parts for $800-$1,000 depending on where you buy.
It has no effect on how your vehicle will drive its simply for emissions only. Here are a few links explaining it for you since you seem kinda lost.

Well my 4Runner hit 198k miles and the p1442 code came up. I reset the code and it popped up 4 days later. I read all these dreadful threads and expected to pay close to $2500. It is an air injection system malfunction, you have two pump switching valves that are located toward the back of the engine bay. My mechanic said typically you have to drop the engine so you’re mainly paying for the labor. I only paid $685... my mechanic found a way to do it without dropping the engine and found the two valves for 118$ each. He also likes me from all the business i give him. If you’re in San Diego hit me up. He’ll probably do yours under $1000.
