Toyota, 4Runner Win Again

Having just sold a Land Rover to get into a 4Runner (and taking a bath), I can hardly believe this press release.

On closer read, the high residual value of LR on late year models has more to do with demand than quality of product.

Never again a LR for me....

... and when it's over,
I'm going straight to heaven in a Range Rover.

maybe not a bad way to get a land Rover/Range rover... go through car max... get the extended warranty they offer....

Mod it for offroading. I wonder if the warranty gets void if you lift, change tires, change springs and shocks..

I don't buy a vehicle with resale/trade-in value in mind because I put 300K or more on all of them and at that mileage they are worth very little to a dealer or an individual.

Vehicles with high resale value are those that get traded in when they're young.

I think it is important to factor in resale/trade in/residual value in when buying a car. It shows that the vehicle is desirable because it is most likely still working good after X miles and Y years.

It also important when in the unlikely event your vehicle gets totaled in an accident or what not. Insurance pays out the wholesale price usually... higher residual vehicles have higher wholesale price. It wouldn't really matter if you were leasing / financing and you bought gap insurance.

But for those that didn't buy gap insurance or paid cash, it is good to know you won't be getting 30% of the buying price of your vehicle when brand new after 4 years when some bad driver rear ends you and it's a total loss. Especially when your vehicle was in perfect working order before the accident.

I tried to convince my wife to get a lexus ISF (used) before getting my 2015 4runner limited. With a newborn on the way, it wasn't going to work... A new 2014 Lexus ISF is close to $80k. A 3 year old one (2011) was asking for 40,000 even with 20,000 miles on it. It to me was a great buy. 5.0L v8, 400+ hp. Lexus reliability.

However when I shopped for 4runners, I couldn't find a good deal on a used 5th gen. So i bought a brand new one instead.

Vehicles that have a high resale value are simply vehicles that are reliable, durable and/or desirable. Resale value has a direct correlation to those three items. It has absolutely nothing to do with when or if you trade them in or sell them.

Next time I trade-in a vehicle(high demand Toyota), I'll look you up and see if you're available to work a better trade-in value for me.

What happens if your car/truck gets stolen/totaled (God forbid)?
You don't take that into account?

The dealer will always try to give you as little as possible for your trade, this leaves them either profit on the backend, or a safety net on moving your old vehicle.

BUT try to trade a Grand Cherokee and 4Runner of equal trim/options/mileage/etc. and see which you get offered more on.

Sure, it has great resale value, but that still doesn't get me a supercharged V8, a power opening rear hatch, track tuned sport suspension, or a standard Trunk Monkey security system!

:peep:

Thus far we've been discussing resale. You've changed direction....stolen/totaled.

OK. What of it?

My point was, it's always a good idea to take in to account resale value because that is close to what you will get if your car is stolen/totaled.

If someone is reading this and thinks, oh yea, i will keep my truck to 300k. Well yea, without any incident, sure.

Not trying to start/win an argument, just my opinion.

:lmao:

Resale value isn't just a metric for negotiations at a dealership, it covers you if the vehicle is totaled/stolen and you are getting a payout from your insurance company. This as pointed out is especially true on an older or higher mileage example. Thus a high resale has many positive aspects.

Your point is well taken, but in my experience, the "car x has a fantastic resale value" thing is way overdone.

Except for odd ball Junkers like most Land Rovers, BMWs, ect. They just get high resale value on false advertising and buyers more interested in looking bling than using their brains. It's amazing what people pay for the garbage BMWs that come through our dealership.

In my experience the price of used 5th Gens was so high, even with mileage exceeding 60k that it made more sense for us to buy brand new for a few thousand more.

So while it may not apply to every car, or even every Toyota... it certainly impacted me in regardto 4Runner.
