LOL a zip-tie vs OEM fastener thread. I can die now because I have seen it all.
For the record, the OEM fasteners are much easier to work with than the zip ties. Armed with a cabinet screwdriver, I can have my grille off in about 30 seconds and I don't break any so there's no cost for zip-ties.

Yeahhhhhhh, I don't get it. I remember hearing people struggled getting the grill off without breaking the tabs and expected having difficulty when I installed my trans cooler. On my first attempt, I had the grill off in a couple minutes using a small flat head screwdriver and not breaking any of the tabs. All this takes is a little patience and finesse. However, the plastic clips do get more brittle over time and I can see them breaking even if you're careful. I know I definitely wouldn't resort to zip ties. Just visit your local dealer and replace the ones that broke.

I've Dremeled off the two tabs that stick out on the four corners and put bolts in there that are kept with nuts. Then just wing nuts on the frame side and wa-la, never have to worry about clips or zip ties. Super solid attachment too. I'll try to find pictures if I can.

This thread wasn't launched as a clips vs anything else comparison, it is about the correct way to reinstall the grille on the vehicle after removal

I gotcha Mike, but it kind went that way except for that one guy with the with the wing nuts. Hey whatever works. It's just that if the OEM (in this case) is the easiest and cheapest way, the discussion sort of ends there. I guess I'm just weird like that. And for the record, I found 2 broke on my 1st Runner and used, you guessed it, zip ties to hold them in. Furthermore, I ordered some Ebay ones for like $5 for a bag of 30. I like to live on the edge.

FWIW, when I was poking around the '99 last December right after I got it, I noticed that the grill just didn't look right. When I got a closer look I realized that only a few tabs seemed to be "pushed in", everything else was just kind of floating around.
After breaking one of the remaining tabs trying to figure it out, I got the last remaining ones off and called the local stealership because at heart, I'm a ' do it right' kind of weirdo but then being told they were special order I just went to the old VW grill fasteners. ( you know them as zip ties, lol)
It bothered me for about .06788 seconds, then I said to hell with it. They were routed so that they weren't visible and I have enough on hand to last me until the sun goes supernova. Now if I had a really nice fo'runner, I'm sure that only an OEM clip would do. I just don't have one of those rigs.

People are just shamelessly cheap AF here. One of the clips that holds the door latch rod in place inside the driver's door broke on mine last week. I searched it and sure enough its a bunch of recommendations from "frugal" dudes who want me to dick around with zipties to fix it. One of the videos claimed it was a great idea for people "on a budget".
Using the technical skills I got from obtaining a STEM degree, I found the part number and got the clip for 1.87 at the dealer. Btw, have you seen some of the unrestored cars at a Concours d'Elegance? Some of them are even rougher than some ugly 4Runners I shipped to Africa.

Yeah, stupid hidden fasteners. I replaced mine with nylon expansion nuts and screws (here). No need for tricks. See the screws, grab screwdriver.

I think I just find it funny that people get butt-hurt over what other people do to their vehicles. Yeah, zip-ties aren't factory OEM, but they work just as well, are cheaper than cheap, easier to remove if necessary, and are completely incognito when the hood's closed. I have a couple replaced with zipties because the factory clips broke and I had a big bag of 1000+ zipties and I was in the middle of a job and I said **** it. I did the job well, and I used OEM (or equal) parts. (Timing belt replacement). Aesthetics in a very hidden spot was the least of my concerns.
To you guys grinching about OEM, you better not have modded your 4runner AT ALL. No lifts, no bumpers, no extra switches on your dashboard, etc. Don't even take the running boards off. That's not OEM.
