Toyota Scout Navigation

Just a question to throw out there..

I have a choice of 2 different Toyota GPS navigation systems. Both factory units.
One is SIM card equipped for maps and the other is using the Toyota Scout system.
My question is, does the Scout system need a GPS antenna plugged into rear of unit or is this done by my mobile device…iPhone in my case?

I know the SIM equipped navigation definitely needs the GPS antenna.

I think the scout will require your cell phone GPS signal as well as cell phone data.

I would go with the SIM option personally, even though the maps may get out of date, they work regardless of cellphone challenges when in the outback.

I agree. My 4Runner came with the SIMM navigation, but I seldom use it. Instead, I use Google Maps. Google Maps will preload what it needs, even though your destination may not be in a cell phone coverage area. Thus, I have never had a problem with it.

Google Maps also works world wide, though I doubt that you would drive your car to the south tip of South America.
