Toyota Service Dept. Diagnostic Computer?

What diagnostic device are/were the Service Depts using to communicate with the 3rd Gen 4runners?

In addition to codes, I want to be able to cycle my ABS pump, etc.

Toyota Handheld Tester. Very expensive through dealer, but more affordable on Alibaba

I have the Toyota Techstream and OBD to USB cable for my laptop, it works with my 100 series, but doesn't on the 1997 4Runner for some reason.

Maybe research which Toyota Techstream software and cable will work with the 4runner, you can buy pretty cheap on ebay and amazon.

If you are looking at the FSM available online for a 2002, it is very different than your 96. I doubt that the Toyota handheld tester will be able to do a whole lot, seeing that 96 was the first year Toyota introduced the OBD-II system on 4Runners and most of their Toyotas.

The systems on the 96-98 4Runners are fairly basic and mechanical.
