I don't see the 4Runner going anywhere. Fj is gone xterra can't compete with the 4Runner and wrangler is slowly disappearing. Toyota would be retarded to let the 4Runner slip out at the same time everything else that is competitive leaves. I would like to see what they offer regarding the frs and supra. That's going to be awesome. 25k sports car vs a 35k beast. I'd spend 35k supra brand new over a frs in a heart beat.

I would love to see Toyota take a Chevrolet approach to BOF construction. Some people might argue that a push rod SBC is "outdated" but they have invested in the platform and they perform just as well if not better than their competition. I would love to see improvements to materials, powertrain, frame construction, etc. to improve mpg's without getting rid of the frame that makes the truck so strong.

Sales have grown every year since the 5th gen came out with a big jump for 2014 calendar year. I'll bet they're even higher this year... The highest they've been since 2007. Could we see 6-figure sales this year? I haven't seen the YTD numbers but no company is going to just walk away from billions of dollars in revenue because if the 4Runner goes, most prospective buyers will have to go to the used market or look at the few remaining alternatives... or possibly look at the full-size market.
Having said all of that, I was hoping for a 6th Gen in 2016 because I was strongly considering picking up a 2nd one (for the wife) because nothing out there really compares in this price point unless we looked at the Highlander class of cross-overs... But meh. 50k doesn't even get you into any of the decent luxury vehicles. 4Runner or 3-series? Pretty easy decision.

Point taken and true, we could drive a unibody T4R SUV off-road.
But the Jeep Grand Cherokee had IFS since before 1995. I have a '95 in my driveway with IFS and a solid rear axle. It does great off-road and until lately I was not interested in trading up to anything newer. The cost and availability of parts for my Jeep made me look for a new vehicle. The locking rear diff' on my new T4R is a nice upgrade too.

The Wrangler is not slowly disappearing. The plant is running at full capacity. They sell everyone they can produce. Wrangler sales alone is 3-4 times annual 4runner sales.

You either have a different year or some other vehicle. The Grand Cherokee did not go ifs on the front until 2005. 2004 and earlier were solid axles front and rear.

I drive a 2007 Pathfinder & still barf up a bit in the back of my mouth every single time I see one of the sleek Pathfinder redesigns driving around. I really, really hope that the upcoming 4Runner redesign won't be similar to the abomination that Nissan created and falsely labeled as a Pathfinder. I think if anyone could do it right, it would be Toyota. Still, I don't exactly have a lot of faith in anything they come up with that will be unibody, if that even happens.
The only reason I joined this site is because my next vehicle will either be a current model 4Runner or the redesign. In my book, there are no other options on the market.

not that the new Tacos arn't tough...but that would take some of the mystique out of the 4runner if that were the case. one of the reasons i pulled the trigger (and there were many reasons) was where it was built...one of the best factories in the world.
i doubt that they would leave the BOF platform in the next gen...but my question is why would they even consider it, since they still build so many BOF, truly tough off road vehicles for the Aussie market. So why would they pull it from the US market, but the Aussies get all of the fun stuff? i mean, ive never been, but is Aussie-land tougher than good ole 'Merica?!?!?! We already dont get the LR Prado in a truely useful non-bling'd up model, we get dissed on all of their diesel engine'd options...at least let us Keep the 4Runner for another 3 to 5yrs...pleez We dont need any more Prius'zeess

I read in one of the off road magazines (Four Wheeler, Toyota 4x4 owners mag or 4wheel and off road) a year or so ago that the current 4runner would probably be the last bof. Whatever the 6th gen is going to be it is already designed and getting ready for production.
It also stated that the Land Cruiser may go away. More people are going for the Lexus version of the Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser sales are to low to justify it.

is it 2wd by chance? ive owned/played around with two, a 96 and a 02. both were 4wd and solid front axle from the factory. and worked on many others that were the same, but as i was saying unibody=/= no offroad. as long as the running gear remains the same or very similar the difference in offroad performance will be negligible. now do i want unibody, no not really but if thats what it takes to keep the solid rear axle and truck based running gear then sure ill take it.
