Toyota V6 vs GM V8 Mystery

Too much at work here to give any solid answers. Major items to point fingers at would be:
- Different gear ratios; both rear-end and transmission wise.
- Power under the curve; peak horsepower numbers tell very little as opposed to the range the engine can sustain power.
- The combination of gear ratios/max RPM resulting in weird numbers for this specific test....for example; the GM needing to pop a shift at like 57 mph.
- To a lesser extent drivetrain losses/efficiency.
Toyota traditionally rates power fairly conservatively and their engines have always performed well, at times with peak ratings below competitors. I doubt the V6 is anymore underated than the V8, if in fact either is. Chevy V8's have also been rated conservatively over the years tho.

:iagree: I think it was a tuner mag some years ago, they said the majority of Toyota engines for the same vehicle consistently yeilds pretty high baseline HP on dynos compared to their flywheel SAE ratings. Their conclusion was either Toyota has extremely efficient drivetrains or they're conservative. The mag leaned towards they're conservative and probably take their numbers from the lowest performer of the bunch, rather than the highest.
Speaking of ratings, I think C&D one year tested both a Camaro and Mustang. The Mustang was rated for something like 330HP and the Camaro was about 280-290HP. Both vehicles weigh similar and ran similar track times. C&D proceeded to ask Ford why, Ford revealed that HP numbers were obtained with prototype headers and a different intake manifold.

Agree with above...also, these two vehicles were tested at different times by different drivers (although by the same magazine).

With the newer SAE measurements, the ratings should be consistent among the manufacturers.
