Toyotacare VSA Platinum, serviced by 3rd party?

So when I purchased my 2010 LE from a Toyota dealer in IL I added the Extended "Toyota" warranty (125k 8 yr) VSA Platinum to the truck which was certified used @ ~49k miles.

I asked several times explicitly if it was a manufacturer warranty and not a 3rd party and was told it was 100% bumper to bumper factory for 125/8yr. Anything covered by factory was covered by the VSA.

Well when I brought the car into my local dealer to have them take a look at the rear shocks (which might be blown) they gave me the impression that the warranty was handled by a service company and they needed to run any and all repairs by them for approval.

So is the VSA platinum just a 3rd party Toyota branded warranty? If so I guess I was lied to/misled.

If that is the case can I take it to any shop that is willing to deal with the warranty company?

The service dept must get approval from the warranty company prior to performing any work so they can get paid for the work. It's not their call whether to approve or decline a warranty claim.

typically even if its a real Toyota VSA

(you should have gotten a phamplet with Toyota cover page (red to boot) and your particulars on the front page)

any/all warranty claims will have to be approved by Toyota Financial (same goes with Lexus, they have to go thru Lexus Financial).

only reason I know this, when I called lexus financial about the extended warranty, all work has to be done by a authorized lexus dealer. I couldn't take it to the local Toyota dealer since the nearest lexus dealer is 550 miles away.

I would have asked as you did; then I would have asked to read the actual warranty and ensure it was indeed a factory offering before signing anything.

All sorts of stories on the WEB about dealers selling 3rd party warranties guised in some way to be actual factory warranties. I have a feeling many simply take the salesman's word.
