Toyotas: a magnet for windshield cracks

Anyone else experience this issue or is it just me? On my 99 Tacoma I caught every rock flying through the air on the highway. I had that windshield replaced twice and repaired twice. On my 05 Tacoma I had the windshield replaced once and repaired four times. Now, on my 10 4Runner I'm on my second repair.

These trucks seem to be at the perfect height for the trajectory of a typical stone being kicked-up by a tire. Does this happen to anyone else or just me?

I too have had to get my windshield repaired already. Had a rock kicked up on the highway. Got the resin repair and my insurance covered it.

Replaced mine within the first year- 2 days later I got a chip that was repaired. Last week I noticed another small chip as well. So, yes.
 
yes. I've had this problem with my last few Toyota's. My 4Runner has 3 chips right now that have been filled. my daily driver, VW Jetta, that I put at least 500 miles a week on, no chips, no cracks.
 
Yep - same boat. 3 x cracks that have been repaired, and a few others that aren't quite deep enough to warrant the repair work. I had 4 repaired cracks in 12 years on my old Tahoe....so the rate at which this truck is catching rocks (or at least cracking on impact) is definitely higher.
 
The glass on the 4R is quite thin. 300k on cruisers and no cracks/chips. 80k on 4R - 1 replacement and 4 chips.

A rock cracked the windshield on my '12 SRV within 2 weeks of driving it off the dealer's lot. :sobbing:
A buddy at work drives an FJ and is on his 3rd windshield
 
Also consider quality of the glass since they all aren't made equal and most insurance companies obviously go with the cheapest but some will cover a premium glass if you ask or at least cover most of the cost. I've currently have an XYG piece and it's past it's usefulness at 4 years old and very pitted but one small crack along the bottom and one small chip that never spread but come April I'll have a new XYG or a PPG Glass windshield in place and I'll never go longer than couple years again since my insurance covered my chosen glass and still only cost me my $100 deductible so even once a year would be worth it.

Sometimes bad luck is in play and windhsield cracks are a way of life,worse in some areas and not so bad in others. Colorado is on the high side for likely windshield damage but with my glass experiences haven't been too bad.
 
Good to know I'm not the only one. This latest chip was big and deep. I literally tried to dodge the rock as it was flying toward the windshield. The Safelite guy came by this morning to repair it, but he could only do so much. I know have a permanent "smudge" in the windshield a little smaller than a dime with ever-so-slightly-visible cracks spidering from it. :nono:
 
40,000km on mine with no chips or cracks in my windshield. i drive mostly highway.

maybe i'm lucky, maybe its the avs deflecter on the hood actually working. who knows? :D
 
It is the aerodynamics of the thing, maybe a bug deflector will help.

My 2004 f250 had the same problem, a known problem with those style trucks. I drive a 95 f350 for almost 200k with not even a chip, and I have drive my current 2003 explorer over 50k now and cannot even recal something hitting the windshield. I drove my 2004 f250 13k miles before I got rid of it and it had a few chips and a large crack across the windshield, the thing just attracted rocks.
 
In my 2 4Rnrs I've had 1 crack. My current 03 has had the windshield replaced, not sure why because it had the aftermarket after I bought it.
 
Just got my first small windshield crack last week with only 2000 miles. The rock was so small I didn't even see it-just heard it hit. Its repairable, but its right in my view and will be annoying. I really suspect the glass is the problem. I took a much bigger rock to the windshield of my Suburban a few days later with no damage.

AVS... Great for rocks and bugs, bad for black birds trying to play chicken...

Black bird got caught in the vortex from the AVS ( black on black, guess he didnt see it :P ) while trying to play chicken with my T4R. Was going 40+ MPH, he lost control smacked my windshield and poped up 30 FT in the air. I thought for sure my windshield was messed up... Only a poo stain...

Same boat, maybe I have AVS deflector too and nothing yet *knock on wood*
