Hey guys. I thought this would be a good chance to get everyone's input on Toyota's recent recalls. I am a public relations major, so I am studying this as a case problem for school. For starters, the Media has blown this into big deal, when in reality most recalls don't receive this much coverage for this long. However, it was just a matter of time before a huge recall hit the mighty T. Personally, i believe that they grew too fast, too quick. Quality did take a hit. Toyota has done many things right (Stop Production, work 24/7, take out ads in major newspapers, and is cooperating with the NTSA; however they have done some things poorly. This is becoming a nightmare for Toyota, which will cost billions over the coming years. Today the Prius was recalled. Historic history is being made for Toyota, and the current trend isn't looking good. Let's hope that the NTSA doesn't find anything with the electronics. Please tell me what you guys think. Besides open communication with customers, what should Toyota do to win back customers and tighten up on quality?

I couldnt agree more. With the downfall of most auto manufacturers, Toyota had a target on their back.....

Heck yeah. Personally I think this whole thing is ridiculous. Media is going way too crazy. They need to latch on to the Honda recall that I just got for my Accord. Apparently the driver side airbag can shoot chunks of metal when deployed, possibly maiming or killing the driver. So if some guy bumps me a little too hard in a parking lot my airbag might kill me? What? Headline- He survived the crash but his face got blown off by his airbag.
Seems to me that everything manufactured on a large scale is going to have a certain amount that will have issues. Everything. I work with medical equipment and we get recalls on stuff ALL THE TIME. Don't hear nothing on the news about all that. Media just needs something else to focus on and it will be a non issue. As for people saying that Toyota's suck now because of this, they apparently are the type to believe everything they see on TV.

Toyota has not been producing vehicles of the same caliber as what they use to be, thus all the recalls. Toyota has been on focused on being GM and they've succeed, #1 automaker and a whole lot of recalls.
Maybe it's a little bit over blown, but the fact of the matter is people have lost their lives. Toyota fans claim it is a small percentage relative to the number of Toyotas sold. But if the problem was only to occur in one in a million cars, would you accept that probability, if it could be your life or your family member's?
Only Toyota and its engineers trully knows what the true problem is or do they? IMO, I think there IS a problem with the electronics and Toyota hasn't disclosed everything. First they blame the floor mats. Now it's the pedal. But it doesn't explain other models not being recalled that experienced unintended accleration or the ones that don't use CTS pedals. Toyota is also the one that praised CTS for their exception in quality and low defective rates. And now they throw CTS under the bus.
I currently own three Toyotas and as much as I wish my next vehicle will be Toyota, I'm going wait until this completely shakes itself out. Good thing for me, I don't need a car in my immediate future. It sucks that it is Toyota going through this. I would love for it to be another brand. With all these recalls, I hate to say it, but Toyota maybe doomed.

If the pedals are made by Nippon-Denso then they are fine. Pedals made in the USA by CTS are the problem.
Ford came across the same problem, dunno if it was the same Co. but anyone care to deal with Runaway F350's??
In some cases some of these people need their cars to speed up themselves because I cant tell ya how many times I come across a camry owner hitting 30mph in a 35mph zone! lol

I agree Uneek. Toyota had the goal of becoming number one and trying to bet out GM, but the tides have certainly changed. Read some articles today that suggested that it is a electronic problem. Many experts say that complaints had nothing to do with the pedals or floormats. I think everyone can attest to the runaway acceleration during cruise control up hills, but it is quickly stopped by a tap of the brakes. The computer overcompensates at times, and pushes harder that it needs to. So, maybe something similar is being created without cruise control activated. All car companies are going to run into problems like these problem sooner or later as electronics advance into cars. Production started again today, so that is good, but time will tell if this pedal fix is the right solution. If not, Toyota could be in serious trouble.

Not necessarily so simple. Searching this and other Toyota forums will lead you to several posts about unintended acceleration with and without cruise control or flooring it to pass someone. These posts were made year/s ago. Reports to the DOT go back to 2003...
Fortunately Congress appears to get it and will be asking the right questions:

:iagree: with the cruise control, and Toyota really needs to work on the logic/programming of the CC. In my 4Runner, on the slightest hill it'll down shift and rev the engine up from 2000 to 3000rpm to maintain speed. IMO completely unnecessary and a waste of gas. I can slightly touch the gas and put it 1 mph over the "set" cruise speed to avoid the CC doing the work and it'll be fine, no down shifts or revs. My friend's tC on the other hand should have it's cruise like the 4Runner's, but it doesn't. The tC will just lose speed when approaching an incline, it won't downshift and rev the engine.
On a side note, there's another allegation against Toyota with the '09-10 Corolla. On this evening's news, reports claiming that it will change lanes on it's own due to the electric power steering vs hydraulic ones of the past, but they emphasized it's not under a recall. However, this one seems unfounded to me, because it's an electric assisted power steering vs a mechanically driven hydraulic assisted power steering. AFAIK, the Corolla is not steer by wire.
I hope the pedal fix will correct the unintended acclerations and Toyota can start to recover from all these recalls. They've got a huge uphill battle espeically with everyone else producing decent vehicles. If the shim doesn't fix the runaway issues, Toyota is going to face the issue of cover ups.
