Toytec Adj Panhardbar Installed

Picked up Toytec's Adjustable Panhard bar this last Thursday and got it installed today. Waaay simpler than putting the stock bar back on (obviously)!! This product is pretty cool, actually. I can't compare it against Sonoran Steel's adjustable bar as I don't own it nor seen it actually installed, but Toytec's was nice to put it in, loosen up the nuts on each side, and then twist to extend the bar to the desired length (and of course re-tighten the nuts on each side).

I haven't tested going over any bumps at higher speeds yet, but I'm sure I will be at some point this week. I'm looking forward to not swaying side-to-side and instead up and down. Here's some pictures below of the install:

Cool, so since it is adjustable it doesnt need to sit parallel with the axle?

Honestly, I don't know the answer to this. I believe it's been said that it's best for the bar to be as parallel as possible to limit the amount of roll or swaying, but I could be miss quoting others. However this setup should help with the side-to-side sway when going over bumps (like speed bumps).

I used my eyes and guessed.

There is a chart running around here from Sonoran steel for the recommended panhard bar length. I can't find it now.

With the adjustable panhard temporarily connected just on the drivers side axle, raise the rear tires off the ground via the hitch receiver using a floor jack, this will automatically re-center the axle equally on both sides as soon as you raise then lower the tires down...then determining how much you need to adjust the panhard is as easy as lining up it's other end with the bracket bolt hole off the frame.

It's best to have the panhard bar parallel with the vehicle at normal ride height. That's the most neutral position to have it. In other words don't take measurements when you still have the cargo area hot tub still full of water.

The more angle you have on your panhard bar the more bias you put on the geometry. With our third gens the bias pushes the rear axle to the driver's side. Especially when you stuff the driver's rear tire.

With a level bar the axle & driveshaft gets pushed & pulled to both sides but it's the same amount of movement to the driver's and passenger's side.

You want your panhard adjusted so that the rear wheels track where the stock ones did with a factory set up. In other words centered to the vehicle.
Probably the easiest way is to use Pythagorean's theorem. 'Member that junk? Not me, I'm pretty sure I was staring at this cute girl the day that was taught, her name was Julie...mmmmm yummy.


a² + b² = c²


a² is the amount of suspension lift you put on your rig. i.e. 6"
b² is the length of the stock panhard bar 37.0"
c² is the new length. Take the root of it of course.

If you didn't pull a vanity move and measure your lift's before and after height with photos for prosperity (yes, of course I did) you can measure your rear lift by measuring the vertical distance between the panhard mount on the axle to the panhard mount on the crossmember.

In my case I have a 6" lift so I would need a 37.48" length on my panhard bar.

Here I'll make it easy for folks.

1" lift = 37.01"
2" lift = 37.05"
3" lift = 37.12"
4" lift = 37.22"
5" lift = 37.34"
6" lift = 37.48"
7" lift = 37.65"
8" lift = 37.85"
9" lift = 38.08"
10" lift = 38.32"
11" lift = 38.60"
12" lift = 38.90"
13" lift = if you put that much work into it to lift it over a foot surely you can figure this out on your own.


Remember, don't include body lifts in your measurements.

Looks good. I just ordered one to go with my LC 7 wraps and TRD front shock setup! Hopefully I'll see the parts soon and I can GET LIFTED!

Right behind the tow-hitch (stock place). I just don't have it there in the pictures so I can access the panhard bar easier. For now, it gets carried there beneath the truck till I can do the rear hatch Hilux/swing arm mod!
 
The bias (diagonal arc) that the axle takes when the drivers wheel is fully compressed, along with an extended panhard bar, can cause contact from the driveshaft with the stock gas tank skid. (now for a shameless plug) The gas tank skid that I produce has been designed to increase this clearance and is tighter to the tank than the stock skid.

Will the adjustable bar help aid in a handling difference as opposed to stock?
You're talking about handling on the pavement correct?
If you have a lift:

An adjustable bar on a stock mount will be better than a stock bar angled on a stock mount.

A stock bar with a dropped mount (that brings the pan had bar back level) will be better than an adjustable bar on a stock mount.

It's a small difference in handling though. It's unlikely you could tell the difference.
