Toytec Not So Great Warranty Service

This post is to not bash Toytec as they do have cool products but just to give others a heads up on my experience.
I purchased Bilstein 5100's adjust. fronts and 5100 rear shocks from them on Jan 10, 2012.

Last week my right rear shock mount snapped. Toyota was ready to place OEM's but I felt that my shock would be covered under warranty. So I brought the car to my tire guy to install for me because he is way less $. So I was already into Toyota for $40 to tell me my shock was toast. My tire guy put it on for $10 bucks. So I called Toytec and bought a new one and sent the broken one in for credit. Toytec calls back and says the manufacturer will not warranty the shock as it is too corroded to qualify. I was like WHAT? The shock is a little over a year old? My OEM's lasted 10 years!!!!!!!!!! Now I am starting to regret going Billy. So peeved I called Bilstein direct. (massive customer service) They tell me my shock has never come through the door. Matter of fact they say "we have not received any warranties from Toytec in over 2 years". Huh. So I call back Toytec and say: the manufacturer said you did not send them my shock. She said that because we buy it from a second party and they said they would not warranty it. I said but you said the manufacturer wouldn't so you lied. She said they buy from a second party and not Bilstein direct. I asked who the second party was and she would not give me that info saying it was to protect Toytec and the 2nd party. I said, then please mail me back my shock from your second party. Well I find out with more convo that my shock is still at Toytec and that they just mail the second party a photo and that is how warranties get done.
So I get my shock and send pictures to Lisa in warranty at Bilstien (did I say massive customer service) She wanted me to take photos of all my bushings and my shocks. She called me to say they are WAY over torqued. (yes my tire guy put them all on...you get what you pay for) That is why it failed. Also to replace all of my bushings pronto or your shocks will not last long. They also sent me free two rear bushings with full photos and instructions. The front bushings are O.E. which I ordered from Toyota.

So my post is that my shocks failed due to over torquing. Toytec just flat out blew off saying there was too much rust and corrosion on the shock and NEVER mentioned any install problem. My tire guy who is really great but you get what you pay for. Toyota Dealer never mentioned my shocks were over torqued. But Bilstein ROCKED.
They had every intention of covering the warranty but come to find out it was install error. At least I have a definitive reason for warranty not being covered. But the BS that rust was a factor just was a joke.

But even though Bilstein was awesome in this "big waste of my time", I will go back to the OEM shocks when they fail.
Here is a photo of my "too corroded shock just over one year of use":

BILSTEINS REPLY: (the two photos of the excessive pre-load and snapped mount are from my 4runner)
Upper stem mount bushings should secured such that following removal of gap between chassis and bushing, five-six addition rotations of the nylock nut will provide adequate bushing pre-load.

Rear Toyota 4Runner with proper bushing pre-load:

Will disallow proper lateral articulation and fatigue mounting point:

Front shock does not include bushings, o.e. bushings are integral in upper mount.

Rear shock uses kit number B4-KT1-Z103A00 or for each shock use:

Ø 1x) 2517640

Ø 2x) E4-SB2-Z008A02

Ø 2x) E4-AP3-Z007A00

Thanks for posting this. I just put 5100's on a couple months ago. . . I should say that I had them put on. I just checked mine and they are way over torqued also. Going to go to the shop in a little bit and see if they will fix the problem.

I asked: So there are no torque specs? Just do as you list? So its more or so like an eyeball torque?

Should I go by torque specs for O.E. provided by Toyota then?

This in from Bilstein:

The torque specs shown are 34lbs torque for the rear but he (Tech at Bilstein) said that is far too much and recommends using the instructions he provided. Thank you.

This is what I'm nervous about as going through a second party, as I just bought a kit from Toytec, and of course after I buy a new kit a used Icon shows up in classified, I haven't installed my kit and debating returning it and purchasing the ICON. But just to conclude you say do NOT torque to 35 lbs. Thoughts/input

NJshadow,
yes they all look pretty rusty and bushings are all cracked after a year.
I never saw my original OEM's when they were removed and I never looked at them but I bet they looked bad. I Just knew I needed new ones. I live on the ocean in the summer and mountains in the winter so salt is really bad. I undercoat with oil once a year, wash and undercoat frequently to try and keep her clean but it is a loosing battle. I would buy a new 4Runner but I am hoping the 6th generation has a body style that I like. The 5th just is too boxy for my taste. So I am going to run her till she either dies or rusts out. I just love my 4runner.

I hear you on the salt, it's bad here in New Jersey too. And my truck was both a PA and NJ truck before I got it. I pulled my stock shocks and replaced with Bilsteins at about 111,000 miles and the stock ones did not look as bad as your picture. I hope my shocks have better luck, so far after about 4-5 months they have zero signs of corrosion.

I would be a bit skeptical that 34ft lbs would cause that. I have torqued mine much more and not had an issue.

So what is the proper torque spec on the instructions he gave you. I'd prefer to go by actual number than just eye ball it...

Eye balling it is easy. Just tighten until the bushings squish out and are even with the washer plate edge. I have installed several Rancho shocks before and those were the instructions they provided with their shocks. I just had these done recently and never noticed or looked at them. I took mine back to the shop a couple hours ago and am hoping the bushiong are not deformed and they come back in shape. Right now they were squished about 1/4" past the washer plates.:nono:

Wow, crusty looking shocks. I've had my Billies/Toy Ulti Lift coming 2 years now go off road, drive with Salty New York roads but my shocks don't look nearly as bad as those.
Did they get acid on them to look that bad?
They look old as hell.

My thoughts exactly. I feel like it was something crazy that must have deteriorated the corrosion resistance they have.

Salty ocean air all summer and salty Vermont roads all winter = accelerated corrosion. I run mine through the car wash with the undercarriage spray as soon as the roads dry after a snowstorm around here and the underside of my rig looks great; almost no rust.

Oil undercoat- how does that work?

So how do you apply an oil undercoat? What do you use? Do you think it helps?

Shady service on toytecs part! Thanxx for the info, I know where not to buy my billies from.

I don't think you should let this experience deter you. It might have been a mistake, you never know. Toytec is an awesome company to buy from and they love Toyota trucks. Most people have great experiences with them and find them very helpful when asking them for help. They are also a sponsor and offer a discount code for the members of this forum.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but it seems like you are trying to blame Bilstein and Toytec for a poor install. Both companies have great reputations for quality products and service.

If I recall correctly, you had Monroe shocks originally. Why, I have no idea, especially since you claim the stock ones were so great. Then you had some shady mechanic throw Bilsteins on. The mechanic you used even put the spring perches on the front Bilsteins UPSIDE DOWN on the first attempt at the install, and you had multiple other issues that you had to resolve. Here's the thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/104451-starting-freak-out-loose-front-end.html

After re-reading your thread from last year and this thread, it sounds to me like you know nothing about working on cars, and your mechanic sucks. Hate to break it to you but many people run these same parts and abuse them offroad and do not have issues. You had a shitty installer, and are trying to blame the parts companies that manufacture/sold you the shocks.

Well I almost bought from Toytec but everyone was saying their customer service was great but when I emailed them and asked them questions they took a long time to respond. So I decided to take my business elseware.

Bought my entire ICON kit from metal tech, they seemed to be more responsive.
