Toytec superflex installed and now problems

I don't really see what the problem is?
Yes the coil makes noise, yes it is annoying, but nothing will break.
If it bothers you that much stick some rubber inserts between the upper coils or swap them out.

Personally I love the way they ride/wheel/flex and have learned to live with the noise.

:confused: That's what I actually meant.... I was too excited that I wasn't the only person with this "issue". I was thinking they were hyper extending, not bottoming out. After measuring the shocks while on the truck, I knew this wasn't happening though.

I actually have no problem with the noise, but if I can fix one more creak/rattle by doing what the manufacturer/supplier suggests, I'll do it.


I installed the 5100's yesterday. To cut to the chase: no, they did not eliminate the noise. I think they minimized it, but not enough to swap shocks.

Both shocks have the same size body diameter, but the lower mount on the 5100's is so much beefier than the 5125's! The mount is huge compared to the 5125's with a steel sleeve and larger bushing. I also really like that they bolt into the stock locations without the top bracket that Toytech supplies with the 5125's.



Also, I believe the 5100's are ~1 inch shorter than the 5125's when measuring from the center of the bottom mount to the top of the bracket on the 25's. In the picture above (and below), I aligned the bottom mounts

 
I dont know if this would work, but you could get a long shrink wrap tube and put it around the top wraps of the coil, it might stop the clinking.
 
I called toytec support today and they never heard of any of this issues before, only thing they suggested was to swap out the 5125 and use what they recommend which is the 5100's.....I'm not hating on toytec or anything I really do love these coils and how they perform, I just want to solve this issue that can be fixed and NOT have to deal with listening to something that's sounds broken and always be aware of it all the time

are you pretty convinced its the coils? do you have any other coils you could swap out to test? bushings for the rear control arm seem ok? I'm slightly concerned we address your issue as I'm about to buy this same SUperFLex lift from Toytec :llama:

Yes the sound is coming from the coils for sure, WHY idk?? And i double checked all nuts and bolts and both rear upper and lower control arms were replaced.....I do have my old OME coils I can try swap them again and go from there.....

Changing out your shocks will not fix the noise. I have Tacoma 5100's and I've had the same problem since installing the superflex rear springs a year ago. I've heard it called coil slap and apparently it's not uncommon when using progressive coil springs - especially when they include a large stack of "dead" coils.

I have not found much mention of it in these forums, I suppose thats because it doesn't happen for everyone. My thought on this is that many of us carry different amounts of weight in back and if you are heavy enough then they won't decompress except over very big bumps/dips, also maybe if you are light enough (no spare and no hitch) they will stay uncompressed enough that slap will be minimal. I have the stock spare, a hitch, and usually an empty trunk. With that setup I have about 1mm between the coils at normal ride height... probably perfect conditions for slap to occur.

You're right about it being harmless and also about the solution. I noticed it the first time I took it around the block after the install. For me It's not very audible with the windows up but with them down it's very easy to hear. I am very "in tune" with my vehicles and noises bother me. I plan to purchase and install a coil spring sleeve and according to my measurement this one would work: Eibach Coil Spring Sleeves CS5002, but at $30 plus shipping for a couple pieces of rubber my frugal side has won out so far.

Interesting....I googled "coil spring slap" and it's a pretty common problem, to think of it I always wondered back when I was shopping around for new coils for my civic there would be black wraps on the ends of the coils and NOW I know what those are meant for, I'm definitely gunna have to make a trip to Ace Hardware or Home Depot and find some rubber hoses and try to use that, another forum people were using the spiral cable wraps which might even be an easier solution.....well now I know what my weekend project is gunna be,

Hey guys.

I just installed the same setup. Superflex with the associated 5100 rear long travel from Toytec.

Pretty sure I'm getting the exact same noise over very minor bumps and it's annoying.

Did you ever have any success with the coil wraps or w/e?
 
I purposely bought LC coils to hopefully avoid this horrible knocking noise when going over bumps etc....

My super flex coils were never installed yet I still have this annoying knocking sound....

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Sucks
 
I dont have any of these issues with my 7 wraps. I run new 7 wraps, left the coil bump stops, left trim packer, no panhard bar or drop with tokicos. No sounds at all. I wonder what is causing it with peoples setups.
 
It's definitely metal to metal contact.

My 4runner didn't have any coil bump stops (inside spring) - I've seen these on most lift installs but they were always a 98 or 2000 4runner so I thought maybe they only put them on those years, which looks like it has a lip that goes between upper spring and body mount. My initial thought was to put a trim packer or rubber coil insulator on the spring's progressive coils.

EDIT: I just watched kammando808's YT video again and he has the spring bump stops, so not sure about that anymore.

I talked with Eibach today, they don't really know anything about the superflex springs because they are probably spec'ed and just shipped to ToyTec but he said to check for contact marks on the spring or anywhere it could be rubbing then go from there, which will determine if I need to get a coil insulator or trim packer or so. Going to check today then I'll report back.

I only get this noise on the passenger side, shorter of the 2 springs, which makes sense, there could be a tiny bit of gap on the expansion of the spring which makes the noise. I get it on every little bump, but only seems to occur on the axle drop.

I jacked my truck up quick and looked between the progressive spring coils and do see a little scuffing but I'm assuming these coils will come into contact sometimes and that will just happen right?
 
I can't say I have that noise. Maybe sometimes but hard to tell. What I can tell though is I was really annoyed that the superflex coils are supposed to eliminate the driver side lean. But for me it didn't. I even called toytec to complain becsuse it clearly says that one coil is taller. But it did not help driver side lean. The guy said evrn for him he had to adjust his coilovers for side lean. I had to buy a ome spacer 10mm.

Maybe that's why we get coil slap with superflex. One is taller then other.
 
I'm getting the coil slap as well and it's starting to drive me nuts! Has anyone tried the Eibach Sleeves that [MENTION=82492]curtperry[/MENTION] linked in this thread? I think I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a pair of them.

Wouldn't you have to compress the spring to put it on top between coil and metal ?
