Hey everyone.

Im about to purchase my 2017 TRD Off Road (AKA trail edition) in the next month and I'm looking into the Boss Suspension. I am new to off roading and want to ease into it seeing as its a brand new vehicle which will also be my Daily Driver.

My intention is to put 285/70/17 with this lift, but my question is what is the necessity for someone like me to replace the Upper Control Arms? Would I be able to still have a great ride quality and performance with the stock UCA?

I see a lot of back and forth in regards to rubbing and strange noises, so I would like to learn more about the benifits or necessity of having a new one vs keeping the stock UCA.

You say you want to ease into off-roading so leave it stock and ease into it. Don't make changes for the sake of making changes. Unless of course you like how it looks and have the money to burn. If anything, upgrade your tires and go have some fun. Many people on this forum have been to some pretty incredible places with a stock height 4Runner. Just sayin.

I agree with this. If you don't even have the 4R yet and your first mod is a lift, that's not quite easing into it. That's jumping into it. You don't need 285's and a lift to off-road. I'd start with the basics first. Tires, sliders, skids, air compressor and some recovery tools like straps and maxtraxxx. That'll get you where you need to go most of the time. Once you get the hang of things and put some miles on the truck then get a lift.

Also some floor liners like weathertech's or Husky's are a must if you're gonna be off-roading.

That's a good point, I will definitely consider taking it to some local spots with a few smaller mods first.

The only reason I was going to jump into all of the Mods so quickly is because we are moving to Germany and I wanted to have the set up ready to go when we got over there so I didn't have to worry about installs and parts over in Europe. In hindsight that may be a little petty of a reason to throw a full setup on right off the bat, but the looks and capabilities certainly don't hurt

I will have a few months in Little Rock before we move so I will take it out to some local places and get a feel for it first.

I'll soon be replacing my Boss lift with a King/Total Chaos setup. If anyone is interested in buying my lift, it's yours. I have the boss lift with:
1. LR UCAs
2. Toytec HD rear springs
3. Bilstein 5160 rear shocks (w/res)

I paid about $1800 for it total, and I'll sell it for $900.

No No No!

It was others such as Bilstiens and Icons. They only Toytech one I saw was broken and not warrantied due to it being completely rusted out.

my Toytec BossS 2.5 front shock is clunking BAD and getting worse (a little over a year old) and Toytec is not going to cover under warranty. (not a lick of rust)
What sucks is the noise has been there for months and we have been trying to figure the problem out. So we decided the easiest solution was to take the BossS kit off the FJ and put it on my brand new 4Runner to see if the noise was still there, then swap from SPC uppers to brand new TC uppers just to make sure it wasn't that. Well it is still there, called toytec and I did what they told me to do and that it may be a bad heim joint. They said I should be able to tell if that's the noise.
I called them back twice and left messages with no return call. I had the shop that put it on the FJ call toytec for me and they are not going to warranty anything. So now it goes back to the shop to try and figure out the issue. It looks like the solution will be to just to Icon since Toytec doesn't seem to want to help. Anywho, rant over!

And yes...I know I put BossS...that is how it is spelled on the suspension.

Have you tried tightening your LCA cam bolts to 129 ft. Lbs. to rule that out?

I have the Toytec 2.0 Boss shocks just installed this weekend. I need to make some adjustments to the coilovers, but my kit did not come with a spanner wrench. I wanted to see if anyone had one of these badboys in the LA/OC area before I order it online.

Since the picture of the BOSS kit on ToyTec shows the spanner wrench, it is supposed to be included (mine came with the spanner wrench). Just call ToyTec, they should provide one.

I have the Ultimate with 650lb springs and an SSO slimline with the side protection pieces and a winch with synthetic line. Works great for me. I know it isn't exactly what you were asking for, but should be close enough.

My truck is set up with the BOSS 2.0 shocks and 700lbs springs all around. I've been running that setup since January 2018. It's paired with a set of 285/70/17 tires on 17x9 wheels.

When purchasing the kit I did the math on the additional weight of the modifications and cargo that I intended to carry on the trail.

Modifications:
- steel engine and transfer case skid plates, 180lbs
- rock sliders, 150lbs
- slimline front bumper, 85lbs
- winch, ~115lbs
- miscellaneous small armor parts, 10lbs
- roof rack (not yet purchased)
- rear bumper and tire carrier (not yet purchased)
- gas tank skid plate, aluminum (not yet purchased)

Cargo:
- 3 people, ~500lbs
- 2 dogs, ~70lbs
- camping gear, food, and water for 3-7 days, ~250lbs

I've been running the SSO slimline hybrid bumper and a Comeup 9500lbs winch since early September 2018. That combination weighs around 200lbs and the weight is well out in front of the vehicle.

On the road with highway pressures in the tires the ride is very well mannered for a truck, but without the nosedive that the stock 4Runner suspension is known for. Cornering is still very surefooted.

When driving off-road (with only recovery gear, a day pack, and misc gear) there is a tendency for the nose to dive when entering a dip without carefully controlling the vehicle's speed. It can result in 'finding' rocks in ditches with the front skid plate. Also I've lost about 0.5" of ground clearance in the front since mounting the bumper.

To date I haven't driven it off-road with a full load of people and gear so I cannot comment on how the truck behaves under those conditions.

What else would you like to know?

I just put this kit on today and am having some trouble with the skid plate going back on. did it just bolt right up for you or did you have to do anything to it? After reading this I should have bought UCA's too, but I will see how close they can get the alignment tomorrow, and go from there.

Howdy y'all. Had my Boss kit on for 50K miles now(since 2015), and my front shocks have been leaking a while...finally getting to refocusing on the 4R, has anyone else had to replaced their fronts yet?

. I know you posted this forever ago but I have the same lift for my 2004 4runner. The shop I took it to 2 years ago looks like they just cranked it up as high as possible. My hub to fender measurement is 24.5" which is huge compared to others I have read. I am going to take off the wheel and shock and adjust the shock so that I have a real 3" lift cause right now I'm looking at almost over 4".... So I was wondering how many threads you have showing on the bottom of your shock so I can get a general idea of how low I have to turn this thing. Thanks!
