Finally had something good happen because of them . So had light come on yesterday ok no big spare tire again , not front right was going & fast . Stopped at my tire guy put some air in , waited , all cool till this morning when I got half a block away from home & light returns so go back over there (he's close) pulled tire off & no nail or screw but a piece of powdercoat had chipped off & was stuck between the bead & wheel & tire . So not saying I wouldn't have noticed before but running to work , you just jump in & go . Finally something positive about THE LIGHT . Plus I don't get how this bugs people that much shit its out of your eye sight so........ :yo:

Some of us just don't need the gadgets after having driven by feel and ear for decades. :D
 
Ironically, I had 5 tires installed on 5 new wheels today (275/70-17). I didn't put them on the vehicle yet because I'm waiting on the new suspension. I didn't realize I had TPMS until the installer asked and came over and verified.

After that I was planning on doing a bypass of the sensors. Can I use the TPMS with a tire mounted on a hitch tire carrier...with the other four? I am getting a CBI one because the 275 hangs down as low as the rear pumpkin in the OEM slot. Reading here that it will fit if I air it down was the first piece of bad advice I have received here on the forum.

Ya Rally not on the V8 , mine fits but its tight . I know when my spare was off in garage it kept it close enough to keep it happy . What did Chris say ? Too many rock concerts !! I drove by feel too, when it pulled hard right I knew I was in deep dodo .
 
I had a slow leak (took several days) that would trip the TPMS. Occurred after new tires bought at Discount Tire.

After three trips back to get it fixed they finally put some kind of goop coating on where the tire bead contacted the wheel and then it was all good, its been a year now of holding air.

You shouldn't have an issue w/ the TPMS on the tire carrier.

I'm running a 285/70/17 (50% tread remaining) in the OEM spare location w/ the V8 tow hitch. It's snug against the tow hitch and I have good clearance on the panhard bar. So the airing down does work - it's just on a case by case basis and depends on the tire model, etc.

Yep, that is the case....a $400 mistake if you will. "New" E rated BFG A/T 275's don't work. It was stuffed against the panhard bar and down to the bottom of the pumpkin.

So that I am clear. If I get a hitch mounted tire carrier that sits above the hitch and just behind the back door, the TPMS should work?

I don't have first hand experience with the TPMS and a spare tire carrier. BUT folks who store their TPMS equipped spares in their garage have said that parking in the garage with the spare nearby will trigger the TPMS to recognize it and turn off the light. So I would think that a spare tire carrier would be fine. Just don't hold me to that! haha
 
The FJ Cruisers and Rav4's have TPMS and they will recognize the 5th wheel sensor no issues, As long as it is within a couple feet of the vehicle's perimeter it should register no issues.
 
Sorry to hear about powder coat messing with your tires Mike. Paint worked better, other than the gouges and scratches from rocks

As far as the TPMS system itself, I do like it, and yes, do know how a low tire fills when driving. I had to do the disable mod to mine due to having a second set of rims for off roading. Too many lights to see on the dash while teddar taddering on them cliffs and boulders. Besides, not enough air in them while in the woods.

And you can be more than a few feet away from the sensors to be picked up by the computer.
