TPMS woes...

Hi all-

I am having trouble with my TPMS and am looking for thoughts.

Last week, with 39 miles on the vehicle, I had new tires and rims installed. The tire pressure warning light was on and the tire guys fiddled with things and said it would take an hour to reinitialize everything.

Since then, the warning light is still on and the tire pressures read “—-“.

I tried to “register” the sensors by following the instructions in the manual but the warning light stays on and the pressures don’t show. I have taken two one hour drives as per the manual and am getting tired of this.

I’ll head to the tire store and the dealer tomorrow but wondered if anyone had any helpful instructions or guidance.

PS, I have a 2020 Off Road Premium. The tires are BFG KO2 and I used the TRD rims.

You say the "TPMS warning light was on"? If that is how you got it from the dealer, they should fix it.

If they were fine before the tire swap, the tire shop broke something. There is not much fiddling :cell: to do with the OEM sensors, besides re-uploading the serial IDs..

Everything was fine before I went to the tire store. They kept saying it was a 2019. I kept saying it was a 2020. I hope they did not fry the computer...but I will find out tomorrow and let you know what happens. I really wish they could simplify the interface (like they did for the automatic door locks!) and just allow us to toggle functions on and off.

Did the TPMS sensors get moved over to the new rims? If you have rubber valve stems on the new ones, the TPMS is not there and they may be on the original rims.

Fair question! Yes the old TPMS sensors got moved to the new rims. I will let everyone know what happens tomorrow...

Went back to the tire store, and they could not get things to work. They asked if I'd be willing to go to the dealer with the understanding they'd cover any costs. So...back to the dealer (just a few miles away). They took me in without appointment and less than an hour later, let me know that one of the sensors was DOA. They were suggesting that the tire store should probably be responsible for the replacement but were open to warranty if need be. I said no problem, and went on a trek for a new sensor (about 30 miles away).

Got the sensor and went back to the tire store. Realized I forgot the key for the wheel lock so went home to get it. Chit chatted with the wife who rolled her eyes hwell: and then went back to the tire store. They mentioned that the "failed" sensor was giving them some trouble last week after the wheels and tires were swapped out (it kept going into sleep mode), so they were pretty confident that the new sensor (which they reimbursed me for) would solve the problem. When I left the shop, the warning light was off, and about 5 miles later, the pressures appeared on the display.

I have bought maybe 20 sets of tires from this company over the last 27 years, and never had a problem like this. They made everything right and I will continue to go back to them when it's time for another set of road donuts...
