tr4 down for the count

So I'm driving down the road today and all of a sudden I smell diff fluid burning. I pull off the side of the road and what do I see the rear brakes smoking. Diff fluid all over the place the driver side axle seal blew out. So I get the rig home with no other damage. So I thalt. I start tearing it down and first thing I ran into the shoes had seised up and welded them self to the drum now here is the head ack. After a hour and halif of fighting with it. I finaly got the drum off. And broke most of the hardwear on the inside. Has any one ever had this problem befor and no the e brake did not seise and there was plenty of life left on the pads. Only thing I could see was the brake adjuster was seized up. All and all said I have a damge of almost 500 with all the parts need to do brakes seals and bearings . I'm not a happy camper today as this is my only vehical. :cry2:

Everything works out, dd you see the little holes on the drum? (before you took it off, I'm not talking about the lug holes) you can get small bolts and screw them off and it will force the drum off. I use that a lot at the shop I work at, a lot of peoples drums are a b!tch to get off. Good luck!

Yea I know what your talking bout. I tried that and it still didn't work they were seised that bad. I ended up having to cut the retainers that hold the shoes in and take the shoes hardwear and all out with the drum then pry the shoes out of the inside of the drum.

Gotta love drum brakes! Are there any junkyards in TN that you can score some of the brake hardware that got damaged for cheap?

i had this same issue(minus the axle seal, and leaking diff fluid) with my 85 pick up a few years back. the rear breaks got stuck, they never backed off all the way one time and yeah grounded down my drums so i couldnt pull off the drums. eventually with a big enough hammer i got the drums off, but it completely destroyed my rear breaks. it was my only vehicle at the time, and i only had money to do a break job(what i thought was needed) and yeah needless to say my truck sat in my driveway for weeks, i fell in love with my mt bike again that summer(or so it appeared, i rode it everywhere).

sorry about the situation man, but yeah sounds like you just gotta bite the bullet and fix the stuff. while your there, replace the rear diff breather, sometimes those can get plugged and that will cause axle seals to leak, cause the pressure builds up in there.
