When I am stopped on a steep hill at a light for example, when I hit the gas my traction control kicks in for some reason. I'ts brief, but totally unnecessary IMO. Is this normal?

It's not "traction control" MB...it's "hill assist"...that's normal operation..when stopped on a steep incline, it engages for about 3 seconds..prevents you from sliding backwards.

It is normal if you are starting to spin. Is it necessary? Sure. Your truck has no idea that you are on dry ground in the summertime. To it you could be on ice getting ready to get hit by oncoming traffic. It is just detecting wheel RPM that is not where it should be so it activates various measures to get them to spin all the same.

Traction control or hill assist?
I can recreate this problem at the same location almost every time. It is very disconcerting, but I am getting used to it. I don't know if it is traction control or hill assist, but either way, it feels like the truck is about to stall, and there's all this clicking/clattering noise. Very weird.
I have noticed that the only way to get this to occur is to have the truck roll backwards slightly before you hit the gas. So if you're lazily switching from brake to gas on a steep uphill, you'll get this issue. I'm tuning myself to not worry about it and just press the gas, and let this clicky/clatter do its thing for a second. I've seen a few startled faces on passengers though!
I have an 11 LE with AWD. Don't know if the 2/4 drivetrain has this issue.

I thought something was wrong with mine. Sounds like gears slipping.
My truck still seems to roll back as well. My former 2012 Pilot had hill start assist, as does my Jetta but they don't engage traction control. They just hold the brake on for 3 seconds after removing your foot, and disengage as soon as you start moving forward.
Seems simpler and more effective. The slip indicator on my 4R does illuminate.

Does anyone read the manual anymore??? It is that paper thing in the glove box, explains ALL of this and MORE! I know, I know, paper is so 'old school', maybe people these days need a 'manual app' :smashputer:

This is traction control. It happens when you are in drive and your actually going backwords. Turn your traction control off and it goes away. These are TE. Its not downhill assist. When this occurs your "traction control" light comes on. Crawl control (TE) is not activated.

Hope that made you feel better. If one didn't know it was traction control kicking in, how would one know it was that? I'm well versed in traction control but never would suspect it would kick in on dry pavement and a mild incline. I wondered why hill start assist was not working, so I looked at that entry in the manual. Only then did I realize that might be the cause of the horrible noise and explanation why the traction control light was coming on.
Jerk. Lots of new owners on here.

Herd, I think you took that wrong bro, all of this stuff is in the manual. Hill start assist in the 4Runner is not like the Honda or VW the Toyota hill start will hold your vehicle from rolling back on an incline for as long as it's needed. If the incline is steep enough and you roll it sets of the warning you hear, go try it out by rolling backwards and putting it in drive.

Congratulations new 4Runner owners, your truck is working exactly as it was designed. Yes, the noise from Hill Assist may be unnerving the first time you experience it but you guys will love it after the initial head scratching.

Seriously though, newguy- it's not nice to call people names. You could hurt their feelings and then they won't answer your question (Which could have been answered with a quick search on the forum, BTW).
