Trail premium, too much?

"I paid $37,800 OTD - no dealer fee, plus tax and title for a '15 trail premium with KDSS" = show receipt or BS, unless you don't have sales tax in your state. The dealership didn't give it to you.

Use TrueCar.com that will help you out.

Also check here, just know people don't know what OTD means sometimes - http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/154274-how-much-people-paying-2014-4runner-out-door.html

What I paid:
2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail Premium with KDSS in Silver (floor mats included $225 retail).

Using TrueCar - $37,950 + $99 fee = $38,049
Add Tax 6.5%, Title and blood = the real OTD price of $41,363.88

Montana = no sales tax. I'm personal friends with the owner but i pay the same as everyone else. I had a special request and ordered ahead of time but but I paid the same as anyone else would. Their business model is one price and no negotiation. You could do the same and fly up and pick one up. The advertised price on trail premiums on the lot right now is 38400. And you'd walk out the door for that price. Wait til fall and you'll see a 500 ish discount. They sell so many to out of state buyers they pick you up at the airport for free

Edit: just pulled my purchase contract out. I lied I did pay $199 dealer fee. Total was then 37,912 out the door and I did my own title and licensing. That's something you'll need to add to the price depending on where you live.

I got my 14 TEP (no KDSS) back in August. MSRP was $40,677. Out the door I got it for $39,750. Did not add anything to it - no warranty, etc...

The discount before TTL was 8.4% off MSRP ($37,260).

Just info to help you on your journey.

I got it through Fort Bend Toyota in Richmond, TX. Sorry, but it doesn't look like they have anything in stock currently that you would be interested in. But... I believe they are a partner with another large Toyota dealer in Houston (I forget which one), so they may have access to more stock. I contacted them through their internet (Bibin was the sales person I worked with), and they gave me their bottom price via email. Basically, I found it online, got the quote via email, and set up an appointment to drive it. Once I got to the dealer, all was done in maybe 2 hours (I did have my own financing already set up). Very pleased with that transaction, even though the price may not have been the absolute best anybody has ever gotten. I tried to beat them up more, but they just straight up said "we can't" and refused to budge. At least they didn't jack me around all day playing the "let me go ask" games and such.

I had already wasted a day at another Toyota dealer, and they played the game, and never got to the price I paid for mine, even with me telling them they needed to move more to get my business and walking out. So I guess that's just the market in this area. Or I'm just not a good negotiator. I don't have the patience to jack around and play games forever to squeeze out every last dime of a deal. Just give me the damn thing!! lol :bounce:

He would still have to pay tax in Texas so it would end up being more expensive than his original price when you add travel and it's almost like buying a used car at that point.

I just bought the same truck from Toyota of Boerne in February. They had to go get it from East Texas. We paid $37,000 out the door with every option except KDSS (I plan on changing the suspension anyway).

Was it a great deal? No. Did I get the truck I wanted? Absolutely.

So, is that one a deal? No. Should you buy it? That's a question for you. :)

Good Deal

Actually in TX it is a great deal. I got mine for $37,500 so you can do a little better. What those of you who are not from Texas don't know is that all the Gulf States have a $995 fee. It sucks but it is what it is. If you want to deal with a dealer out side of the gulf states you can knock another $1100 off.

That is impressive that you got it from them for that price. I was trying to deal with them and they wouldn't even match the $37,500 that a dealer up in Dallas was offering me. I called every dealer in Texas and at the time (December 2014) no other dealer would even match the $37,500. So I went with the dealer from Dallas and had them drive it down to SA!

I was also able to get 3 years at 0% though so I'm happy with my deal.

...and that is why I almost bought one in Colorado.

That is good customer service. I wish all dealerships would learn from that one.

Toyota of Boerne serviced my 2007 "007" Tacoma when I first moved here and they were still North Park Toyota. They have sold me a 2008 Tacoma DC SR5 PreRunner, a 2013 Scion tC, and finally this 2015 TEP. They never have great deals, but I have been able to get them down on price on at least 4 occasions (helped a co-worker buy from them too).

Toyota of Boerne knew I was not opposed to going to Colorado to get the 4Runner I wanted, but they gave me a good deal on trading in my motorcycle (read - I didn't have to tow it to Colorado). So, I couldn't turn it down.

(here she is 2 weeks after I bought her. Storm Mountain, Colorado)

I had a good experience w/ Toyota of Beorne as well. Upped my trade in value, knocked about 10% off MSRP if I remember correctly, and I was satisfied. I only visited twice, and did most of my negotaiton via a few emails. I was very up front letting them know I was not paying MSRP and did not NEED a new car, which I think cut through a lot of the BS. Still did a couple "let me get my finance guy" routines, but I stood my ground that I didn't want to pay for frivolous options, and I was willing to order one to my liking if they wouldn't knock those off the price.

All in all, I probably could've sat and argued and left and come back more times and gotten a bit lower price, to me it wasn't worth the hassle. I left happy and that's what matters.

You can usually get one shipped for 1k or so. Then it's pretty close to a wash. The main point was that they Texas dealer doesn't pay any more than the Montana one. They just have a much higher profit margin and there should be room to negotiate. I'd start with Costco. Their prices were very close. They just give you a ticket to take to the dealer they have an agreement with, but usually a pretty good deal They sell about 400000 cars a year through that program so it's a big volume to negotiate with.

That is very similar to my experience. We had been lurking the lot once a week for a month. I already had my 2003 SE with a buyer lined up, but I didn't need a new 4R to replace it immediately. I just wanted my motorcycle gone. I

I got the same dance routine once or twice, and we almost left the final sale. In the end, I got what I wanted, and even my wife was happy with how it all went down.

...no wonder people hate dealerships.

Dare I say that, not being in the position of needing a new vehicle, I actually enjoyed the short amount of back and forth? I always thought people who said they enjoyed that part of car shopping were crazy, but being in the position I was in, it was more of a game and I really couldn't lose. "That's a really low car payment mc813" "a) the payment isn't the number I'm looking at, it's the total b) nothing is lower than the $0 payment I have right now" :smokin:

That's the thing. They do. In Texas there is a "Middle Man". "Gulf States Toyota" is the middle man and they have a $995 fee. Basically my understanding is when Toyota wanted to enter the Gulf area they made a deal and created a distributer "Gulf States Toyota". All the gulf states have to go through them to get cars and don't deal directly with Toyota.

** My info may not be entirely correct but if you want I have info on it and I can dig it up. **

That is my understanding as well. Also, Gulf States has a tendency to put nasty add-ons that are over priced before shipping to the dealerships. Even the Tacomas and Tundras made here in San Antonio go through Gulf States' grubby fingers before going to the dealerships' grubby fingers. It is an antiquated racket that benefits everyone but the customer.

<steps off soapbox>

Yeah! I wish they would stop putting pinstripes on cars/trucks. When I started looking all the white T4Rs in town had pin stripes and they looked horrible and were charging an extra $250 for them.

And it appears Gulf States likes to add crap to nearly every one that goes through to jack up the price/profit. This is done prior to dealers receiving the vehicle, and since the dealers must get billed some portion of these unnecessary add ons, they don't like to remove these items or costs for the buyer. What I don't know is whether GS does this themselves, or if dealers order the extras and play GS as the "bad guy" when buyers complain.

I paid $41700 USD......welcome to Canada..:pout:

I was a hair over 50k (CDN) for my TEP here in Canada. Which works out to about 40,600 USD. I still feel I got a good deal because my price was 2% under MSRP, they upgraded the tires at my request, and gave me almost 2.5x the trade in value for my truck that 2 other dealers offered. Shopping around saved me thousands in this case. Dealers can (and do) make a lot of money on trades. That's great, I want them to succeed in business as well.

notes:

that's including fees, and my glorious 13% sales tax so the politicians can continue to live exciting lifestyles that include bogus expense claims of phony primary residences.

Oh Canada.

Dealers only make 1-4% on these new vehicles. People make wild claims on the internet all the time about how skilled they are at getting the best deal, which sometimes involves the dealership losing thousands of dollars for the privilege of bending over backwards for the buyer. There's a number on my purchase invoice that looks pretty impressive too--it's above the sub total.

There's two prices I'm always sceptical of; how much someone paid for a new vehicle out the door, and how much someone paid for firewood.
Both seem to be prone to exaggeration in the buyer's favor.
