Trail premium, too much?

I was a hair over 50k (CDN) for my TEP here in Canada. Which works out to about 40,600 USD. I still feel I got a good deal because my price was 2% under MSRP, they upgraded the tires at my request, and gave me almost 2.5x the trade in value for my truck that 2 other dealers offered. Shopping around saved me thousands in this case. Dealers can (and do) make a lot of money on trades. That's great, I want them to succeed in business as well.

notes:

that's including fees, and my glorious 13% sales tax so the politicians can continue to live exciting lifestyles that include bogus expense claims of phony primary residences.

Oh Canada.

Dealers only make 1-4% on these new vehicles. People make wild claims on the internet all the time about how skilled they are at getting the best deal, which sometimes involves the dealership losing thousands of dollars for the privilege of bending over backwards for the buyer. There's a number on my purchase invoice that looks pretty impressive too--it's above the sub total.

There's two prices I'm always sceptical of; how much someone paid for a new vehicle out the door, and how much someone paid for firewood.
Both seem to be prone to exaggeration in the buyer's favor.

Picked up my TEP last year for $45,500 CAD OTD, but with no trade in. Makes it tough to compare a price with a trade in (and a generous one at that) to one without as I would imagine the trade in value and new truck price affect each other. This is on top of different tax regimes and the treatment of trade-ins among US states that features prominently in the "How Much Did You Pay" thread floating around here somewhere.

P.S. Taxes in Canada are relatively high not because politicians like perks (they do), but because Canadians like to have things that someone else has to pay for, hence why most of your federal tax dollars go to social services, pensions, and health care.

KDSS what is this exactly?

I am just about to pull the trigger on buying a new T4R and want to know if I need the KDSS on the Trial Premium model. I see its an option.

I think that is a fine deal for the Denver market. As we know, the TE's are a sellers market here so the "smoking giveaway deals" are fallacy. Don't happen.

My TE is loaded to the gills including KDSS and I felt good walking out for $39K before TTL. I could have walked out with a loaded Limited for the same price (they are much more willing to deal on them and the SR5 here as you know) but I had specific requirements and to be honest $2-3K is not that big of a deal to me.

Before I bought my used '14, I shopped most of the dealers along the front range. The best I could find was ~$40.5k for a new TEP with KDSS before TTL at a dealer in Denver (as of last week). The dealers around here don't move much on the Trails.

I did however get top top top dollar on the trade in for my '10 FJ.

I was making another deal two days ago with cowboy Toyota in Dallas. Salesman offered me a trail premium with kdss for $38200 before taxes and he was going to deliver to me. He assured me it had kdss so I went through the process of sending him info for my trade in. After spending two days going back and forth to get things in writing and a deposit put on it. He calls me last minute and told me it did not have kdss and tried to sell it to me anyways for the same price. At first he said the crawl mode was kdss. Not sure if he had no idea or was just trying to bullshit me. He kept insisting that kdss was not a big deal. Blah!

This past Monday, round rock Toyota had been contacting me all week saying that they are getting a white trd pro after it was being shown at the xgames. Sales girl calls me all week to make sure I'm interested and reassures it's white. On Tuesday, she calls says it's coming in later. I take time off, clean my trade in, and get my finances ready and drive there. When I get there, they pull up an orange trd pro which pissed me off because it completely wasted my time and had to drive home with nothing. They tried still tried to sell it to me saying that orange was the only color option for the trd pro. What pissed me off the most is that the sales girl that told me it was white and to come in never showed her face when they pulled up the orange trd pro. She wouldn't explain herself or apologize for wasting my time. I was pretty much willing to pay msrp on a white one and trade in my car that day. :(

The process of buying cars suck lol

Do it all over the phone and via e-mail. If the salesbeing doesn't know how to use their computer to send you a list of codes as to what is on the vehicle, its color, etc. have him/her/it go out to the vehicle and actually look at the Monroni(explain to them that's the window sticker). For example, KDSS is clearly listed on it.

All the out of town dealers I have purchased from in the last few years (CO and NE) have been happy to give me a trade in quote over the phone with the understanding that if I was lying to them, the quote was invalid. I never had one back out of their phone quote. Important, obvious, (sometimes not mentioned by people bragging about the amazingly great, way below invoice price they paid) but easily overlooked: A seemingly low price on the new vehicle doesn't mean a whole lot if they low ball you on your trade once you are being hustled at the dealer. Several times I've had dealers beat other deals on the new unit by $500 to $1,000 ("to earn my business"), but offer me over $2,000 less on my trade. You negotiate them separately and look at the bottom line. Again, you can talk to them over the phone, but get the trade and new vehicle, with all charges, confirmed via e-mail.

I live in a different sales region than you so my 3/31/2015 purchase probably isn't relevant price wise. However, it speaks to the potential fun vs. suck factor. I dealt with the GM of the dealership (former internet mgr.)not a salesman who is usually clueless and always has to get mgmt. approval of any offer anyway. Try to work with the internet manager. Trade in quote took GM five minutes. New vehicle negotiation took two(they know what they can sell it for). Financing took another two. The GM had the vehicle delivered 75 miles for my inspection, no charge. It was as he described and what was in his e-mail. After a thorough test drive on Interstate, crappy back roads, a couple of livestock trails, etc., delivery person(one of the dealership's salesmen) had me sign all the paperwork(prepared by finance dept. in advance), initial a sheet refusing all rust & dust, dealer add ons & extended warranties, and he drove back to the dealership in my trade.

Atx4runnertrdpro, its up to you man.

first off, nobody has yet seemed to mention that the only difference between the trail premium and the trail is:

 1. softex leather seats
 2. side mirror turn signals (more expensive if you break it)
 3. sunroof
 4. other piddly crud see 1engineer signtature for the trim difference thread

this stuff is the reason that when i was looking i wanted a new trail, with KDSS, and i approached many dealers through truecar and all they could do for me was tell me it was "impossible" and there was "no way" (stupid gulf states, whose cruddy business practices have already been mentioned here more than once), and then tried to sell me other ones i didnt want. Don't be afraid to look outside of TX man, the deals are out there if you want to seek them out.

now again, the difference between the SR5 and the Trail is significant, but if you do not need the trail edition for the rear locker, KDSS option, or the other nice fancy offroad touches, then i think the smart practical decision is to get the SR5 and mod to your hearts content, and you will find many here have done just that.

i am def one to say that not all decisions are made with practical motives and if you fell in love with the trail edition, then get it, at the end of the day its your money to spend it how you wish on something you can live with and be happy with. we are just the peanut gallery waiting to see what you decide and voicing our opinions whenever we feel like it, but hey you asked what we thought.

also i think the price is good if its good for you. if you want a smoking deal it might be time to look at flying out of state and driving it home, as many have done as well. Because the texas dealers seem to be very proud of the trail editions (with or without KDSS) if you know what i mean...

but hey, whatever you decide, its a 4runner at the end of the day.

I just landed about three hours ago, spent the week in Denver and I had my eyes open for 4Runners and Tacomas and let me say they were like flies, everywhere I looked, I saw at least one of them. All of the Tacomas were 4WD of course and had camper tops. That seemed to be the norm...

Yep. Got tired of a hundred posts like this so I created a thread that went over all the differences between models. You can see how well that worked...

I have created many threads to help people understand or to explain concepts. Problem is very few ever search for the answer even though they are out there. Nowadays I just post in more unique question threads.

Montana = no sales tax. I'm personal friends with the owner but i pay the same as everyone else. I had a special request and ordered ahead of time but but I paid the same as anyone else would. Their business model is one price and no negotiation. You could do the same and fly up and pick one up. The advertised price on trail premiums on the lot right now is 38400. And you'd walk out the door for that price. Wait til fall and you'll see a 500 ish discount. They sell so many to out of state buyers they pick you up at the airport for free

Edit: just pulled my purchase contract out. I lied I did pay $199 dealer fee. Total was then 37,912 out the door and I did my own title and licensing. That's something you'll need to add to the price depending on where you live.

So you really just paid the extra cost in property tax ;)

I bet you two are a real hoot at a BBQ. LOL have never seen a group of people who get more pissed off about crap that doesn't matter in the real world.

CLUE: Somebody posts something you (or "1Engineer") don't like, move on by it. Is this concept that difficult for you to understand???

This is a little off topic but more to add to my suv woes. I have a company sedan that's assigned to me named Cynthia whom I had for many years and racked on the miles. Recently with the combination of too many trips for repairs, old age, and the high mileage it was time to retire her. I get an email that I needed to turn in Cynthia and trade her in for a lesser mileage suv. Super excited of getting something more comfortable and at the same time sad to see Cynthia go. I make the trip to fleet and greet my new girl Cindy. She's a little dirty with about 41k miles on her but still thrilled that she just needs to be cleaned up. I worked on cleaning her up and take her in to be detailed.

She comes out as good as new with just a few dings and scratches from her previous owners. I take her for a drive and she's amazing. Not more than two hours later, I get a call from one of my bosses. He's been eyeballing Cindy when he found out I got her that morning and tells me that's he's trading me his old sedan for her. It was nice knowing her even though it was short lived. Lol, I'm telling you guys you can't make this stuff up. It's like me being in any suv is not meant to be. :(

Your boss is a :censored:

Last week I just did 36,3 on a TEP without KDSS.

I am personally against it, because I can drive, and when I start lifting, and wheeling my truck, I don't need anything else to break.
