Trailer plug connector

I had a feeling it was something like that. It seems that it only maintains the charge on the battery, but it won't put any on it. I thought I had ran it down but more likely scenario was that the last person that used the trailer ran the battery pretty low and me leaving my Engle on overnight killed it off... So my trailer wiring was doing zero for the problem.

wire guage is fine - it's the VOLTAGE.

Does anyone know if the 7 pin on 5th gen is wired to charge a trailer battery? The diagram on the cap doesn't show that pin to do anything but all the searches for it I've done say it should.

I took the teardrop out for the first time with my 4Runner and the battery died on it. Granted I had my fridge running overnight but usually if my battery is topped off it hasn't been an issue in the two years I've done it with my LR Disco.

I hooked the trailer up and ran the engine for a good while to see if it would get SOME charge and it didn't do much.

I'm out with it now and I didn't bring my volt meter like and idiot.

Not that it matters right now, this I can figure out once I get back but I'm bored and have signal :)
The 4R alternator has a built-in controller, and that controller uses a "sense" wire to adjust the Voltage (and Power) beign generated by the Alternator. Right when you start the SUV, it generates lots of amps, at high Voltage (~ 14.4V) to charge the 4R "starting" battery. But after a running for a while, while, it "sees" good voltage on the Sense wire - and drops the Voltage a lot (my own 4R measures about 13.8V). 13.8V is insufficient to push a useful amount of power into a Lead-Acid Battery, it's a mere "float" Voltage level.

Next: Although the wire is AWG #10, (note: it's fused at 30A, anything smaller would be illegal); there is some voltage drop along the 20-30 feet of distance. (It varies according to current). Now turn on the Trailer's Refrigerator DC heater element, and think about what happens (In a Norcold N300.3, it's basically a 1-ohm resistor, pulling Amps equal to the Supply Voltage. Small Dometic models are similar.)

It pulls current from the "best" Voltage Source. The Trailer's "house" battery might be discharging at only 12.2V (~50% SOC), but if the circuit to the TV tired to pull more than about 6A - it would go lower than that. So more than half of your Fridge power is coming out of the Trailer "house" battery, even though it's already discharged to about 50%.

Titanpat57 is correct about the one possible solution: If you want to charge the trailer battery, a big short wire (#8 or #6) between batteries would do it - because the 12.1V Trailer battery would "suck in" a lot of Voltage from the "starting" battery, dragging the "sense wire" voltage down - and provoking the Alternator to provide more power.

Somewhat expensive "voltage boost" machines (by "Redarc" of Australia, and 'Ctek" or Sweden) provide a nearly perfect solution, by pulling "lots of power" at lower TV Voltages (from 14+, all the way down to about 12.5, when they "disconnect" form the TV to protect the Starter Battery) through the Bargman, and they Boost it for your current battery State of Charge (typically 14.4V if it sees that "Boost" Mode is appropriate, dropping to 13.8 "Float" autromatically.)
 
The 12V Power plug on the 7-way should be something like 12AWG and made for powering auxiliary items on the trailer. Not sure what's actually on the 4Runner.
I must eat my words from yesterday. Curiously, the "Battery Charge" wire seems to be <= 14AWG. (From under-the-dash "Trailer wiring" back to the 3-wire of two harnesses outside and underneath (the other one is 4-wire). Even though it's fused at 30A. Maybe Toyota feels that it's all "chassis wiring", with magically high ampacity.

Anyway, I just pulled a 10 from the battery (with 30A Circuit Breaker), cut the old one, and joined it to the new one at the rear corner of the back. I pulled the original "Trailer Battery Charge fuse", so that it's not pulling current from both and pushing it into the 14 AWG segment which remains (~ 12 inches). This prevents some Voltage Drop and power loss along the original #14 wire, which got "kinda high" above 20A.

The Grounding wire is much bigger, and seems to be "no problem". ;)

Like someone else said, it's possible to get used to the location. I just reach under there and plug it in these days.

It's there for a reason - mainly to not get ripped off when you're going off-road.

Which makes me wonder why they didn't use a locking hinge system: lower and lock for highway towing, raise and lock for offroad. Then it wouldn't have to be permanently angled down like it is now.

You could even lower and lock to plug it in, then raise it back up for towing. Repeat to unplug.

Anyway today I went to tow a trailer and found out I have only my signals working from the plug under the truck. There is no power for running lights Why would that be? is there something that should have been plugged in on prep? I have doubts about the PDI being done and I rather not get into whole mess

The trailer could be wired differently then the truck side...or you could have grounding problems on the trailer side. I would eliminate the latter first.
 
i took a test light and checked for power coming out of the plug from truck
Nothing just signals trailer wires not connected really strange

Then maybe go up underneath and look where the pieces actually plug together, might not be "pushed" together tightly. With key to on position...brakes, turn signals, stop should all work with a test light.

Then you might have a fuse blown from bad trailer wiring...but not 100% sure.

just weird The 7 pin has running lights but my 7-4 adapter doesn't work with my current setup.I got some funk going on :shrug:

There are 2 30-amp mini fuses (green) and a relay in the under hood box that are related to towing. Check both of those fuses. IIRC, one fuse is for brake lights and the other is for running lights. If the trailer has a 4 way connector, why not plug it in directly and not use the 7-4 adapter?
 
both plugs don't seem operate as they should the 7 or the 4

For some reason if I plug my trailer in while the 4R's lights are on, it will blow a fuse. If the lights are off when I plug it in, everything works fine. I've had the trailer for a long time and it's never had a problem except with the 4R. I'll try to figure it out one day, but until then I just make sure the lights are off when I plug it in.

Does anyone know if you can use both the 4 pin and 7 pin at the same time? I'm getting a small camper and want to use the brake lights on my bike rack attached at the rear. Might just tap into the trailer's wiring, that's another option. Just wondering if anyone has tried this?

I don't see why it wouldn't work, as long as the covers don't interfere with each other as they both hinge towards the middle.

I towed for the 1st time this weekend and found the 4-pin wiring on my trailer wasn't long enough to reach the plug tucked way up under the truck. I ended up using a 7-pin to 4-pin adapter to get the extra length I needed, but I think a 12" 4-pin extension is in order.
