Trailer wiring routing?

I'm fixing up a dealer hack-job. Instead of running the trailer wiring connector through that square plug to get outside, they removed one of the circular rubber plugs closer to the wheel well and routed it through that hole.

I got a new circular plug for that hole and went to go feed the connector through the correct location. However, I can't seem to find an area that is big enough for the connector to actually get through...

Any pics on how the connector is supposed to exit the vehicle from underneath? I see hole but they don't look big enough for the connector to go through.

I hope this helps? I traced back from the trailer hitch to just forward of the wheel well, then up through. There was actually a connection there, got the back end of that wiring from dealership. So if they didn't hack past that point, you may want to check into this.

My 2002 (factory wiring) has a cable coming down through (or near) the vent hidden behind the bumper on the driver's side. There is a connector under the vent where the inside and outside wiring meets.

I used a Hopkins kit on my 98 and I ran the wiring through one of the square plugs under the cargo mat near the door. I think I ran the wire out through one of the square holes shown below. I probably ran it from the outside inward.
