trailing arm heim crooked

Hi fellas i just installed my icon stage 5 on my runner and the trailing arms uniball looks crooked on one side, the other side is straight. i know it's a uniball and it's supposed to articulate around. does this looks right to ya'll? also i tried to get an alignment today and the tech said that i needed rear track bar to line it up right. do you guys install the rear track bar? thank you in advance.

Put a big wrench on the jam nut and back it off a little. Turn the uniball to where it goes. Then tighten up the jam nut.

so do you think it was just loose from icon? i did not loosen that big nut. just installed the way it came from the factory.

probably wasn't tightened down all the way. Hopefully you checked the length with the stock ones prior to putting them on, unless you are going some rear angle tuning.

My metal tech ones turn and I do what was suggested above. Turn and re-torque

the way i checked the length, took out the old trailing arm and used the factory bolt and measured it like this.

The Heim spacers might be deformed due to being under or over torqued. Disassemble and inspect spacers for damage. Torque to 98 ft-lbs, per Icon. Also make sure your pinch bolts are torqued evenly and to spec: 40 ft-lbs

There will be some play in matching the length with the bolts put through the stock and new ones, and when mounting, be careful and precise. Keep the axle from moving too.

Also, you should measure your difference in wheel base length to make sure you are square. Does it pull to one side while driving or dogtail?? You can make small adjustments with the hex collar. I dialed mine in perfectly. No rotation on either of them, I dont have a track bar.

the heim spacer is not damaged, already checked that. it's only been driven a few miles since i installed. 98 ft-lbs is that the specs for the big nut right next to the heim? i did not check the torque specs on any of the bolts in there, just took them out of the box from icon checked the length of the bar and slapped them on. but i will check them for proper torque specs

Yes, that is for the big nut next to the heim and for the one that goes thru the axle mount end too. Ya, the correct torques are vital, that is probably why its rotating like it is. Try shaking the arm and the joint with your hand to see if there is any play. Also, you should check the torques after a few offroad miles and periodically from then on. Good luck with it. I'm sure you'll fix it, and learn even more.

The upper picture looks like the jam nut isn't even in contact with the arm anymore. My guess is it wasn't tight on arrival and has backed off due to driving and suspension flex. You should be able to just straighten up the helm and tighten everything down.

i will check everything when i get back tonight. now how do you check the torque spec for that big nut? i have a torque wrench but you can't torque the nut.

i will give that a try later today. btw i've got a bumper just like yours that's going in soon but mine has the loop around it. looks really good on your white runner.

Your Husky wrench died, so youll need another nice sized torque wrench. Get quality ones. The small one is for the pinch bolts. Also, the pinch bolts require a 3/8" 12 point socket, nothing else will fit.

Are your trailing arm bolts oriented in opposite directions on each arm? Just like the stock ones were? I noticed that you had them going the same direction when you were matching the length to the stock ones (just checking).

Just to be clear, the large adjuster nut does NOT get torqued! It is for adjusting length only. The two smaller pinch nuts is what holds it in place and they have their own torque specs which is something like 45 but look it up in the instructions. Do not ever turn the large adjusting nut or heim unless you have loosened the pinch nuts!

My guess is that the pinch nuts were not torqued to spec and so the heim has been allowed to rotate... Simply loosen the pinch nuts and rotate the heim back and torque them properly. You MIGHT want to remove it and double check length as someone else suggested as well. Don't want your rear axel tracking sideways :)

The cross bolts that attach the arm to the chassis are 96 lbs and you torque the BOLT head, not the nut since the nut is a locking nut.

The hex collar is supposed to be like that, otherwise you have adjustability in only one direction. The pinch bolts keep the hex collar from rotating.

Correct on the bolt heads, but the specified torque, per Icon, is 98 ft-lbs. The stock ones are 96 ft-lbs. I don't deviate from what the engineers at Icon tell me.

took the torque wrench back to home depot and they gave another one. no questions asked. the lady just checked it was a husky brand and she swapped it out.

thanks for the pictures. the two torque wrench you posted will tighten the two small pinch roller and the two main bolts that holds them together, i was referring to the very large nut that next to the heim, you cannot torque that with a socket. but i read the next post by warthog he clarified it. you do not torque the big nut next to the heim.

the way i took out the bolts is the way i put them back. you cannot loosen then nut, i think it's a one way, you have to loosen the main bolt.

thank you for the clarification. now it makes a lot more sense to me. how could the length be off? i'm not looking forward to taking the arms off again as they are a PITA to get the bolts thru.

Maybe contact Icon about their suggested method of setting the trailing arm length.

It seems counter-intuitive to buy adjustable trailing bars, and set them at the exact same length as the OEM bars that you removed. The adjustment is meant to accommodate the lift, afterall.

Looking forward to you getting the kinks ironed out hearing your impressions of the stage 5 kit.

I called icon today and they told me that's normal. they seen some vehicles do that. they also said that i can get it back straight and retorque and see if it does it again. I just don't like seen one of them sideways like that. I will get them back straight and get an alignment and see what happens. i'll keep you guys posted.
