Tranny holds in second for first few miles...

Hello all,

I bought my 02 Sport Edition last January. Ever since I have owned the truck, I have noticed that when I first get in it and drive a few miles, the tranny does not shift out of second when you would expect it to. After a few miles it shifts as expected. Is this normal behaviour for these trucks? Thanks.

Be more specific. How long does it stay in second gear for? When the engine and tranny is cold it shifts gear in higher rpm's but should not be for acouple of miles. It will be alittle stubborn when shifting. I usually let the engine warm up for about a minute (atleast a minute) before driving off.

Basically, I will get in the truck, start it up and drive off, it shifts from 1st to 2nd normally, but will not shift out of second even when you are going, say 30 mph. Then I would probably come to a stop, then start off again, when I hit 25 or 30 this time it will shift to 3rd, this is probably a mile or two from my house. For the rest of the day it will shift normally. I have driven many vehicles over the years and none have done this. I was wondering if this was something Toyota designed into the system or whether the trans had issues. Thanks.

That's normal. It can get a little annoying, but it's nothing major.

Mine does the very same thing, has to be designed. Same year and version. I don't pay much attention to it anymore but I remember if the revs get to around 3500 it will shift.

Mine has done the exact same same thing since I bought it . It's normal .

Mine too. Funny as I almost posted this same question a while back. Mine will from 2nd to 3rd when cold, but at a lot higher RPM. It seems that as soon as my temp gauge starts rising off the lowest mark its warm enough to shift normal. Usually take about a mile.

Yes, very annoying. Cold engines arent supposed to be revved so it doesnt make a lot of sense.

The tranny fluid sensor needs to read up to a certain temp before the computer will let it shift normally through all the gears. It will go into 3rd at a lot higher rpm than normal, but it will not go into O/D. Let it warm up for a couple minutes especially on cold mornings, cold ATF is a little hard on the tranny IMO.

130F water temp, OR ~2600 RPM. Either condition must be met for the first shift to 3rd from a cold start.

Agreed on driving easy for the first few minutes being the best method, as long as you aren't just idling in park...which does nothing to warm the ATF. :wink2:

First time I have heard ~2,600 RPM being enough to shift it out of 2nd. Normally mine will rev to almost 3,000 RPM without shifting. That's not getting on the pedal hard or anything, just normal acceleration.

I wouldn't be too worried. Mine does the same. Sounds like a cold engine.

2600 is almost 3000, Clemson.

It's controlled by the ECM, so it's a fixed RPM. One of the many things I learned while having my transmission replaced last winter. Also, both are easy to witness with a scanguage.

Ha. I just wanted to specify. By the the same logic 2,100 is also close to 2,600.

I would like to know what the actual RPM is though. I wonder if it's in one of the manuals.
