Tranny making weird whining noise

I just noticed this the other day, but when i'm accelerating in gear, my tranny (or so I believe) is making a whining sound. It seems to happen in all of the gears, and the pitch gets louder as the rpm's go up, but ONLY when it's in gear and moving, so it's not the engine. As soon as a put the clutch in whie driving, it's gone. The most accurate description of the sound it's making is the sound tires make when your on the highway, higher pitched and constant.

Any Ideas?

It's because of your body lift.















I'm kidding! Are you sure it's the trans and not the diff?

Toyota manual transmissions usually don't whine on ALL gears when they start to go bad.
Usually starts with 5th. I'm not saying it isn't your trans, but could be something else.

Well I can't hear it whenever I go over 30mph cuz my tires roar on the road pretty good, but I KNOW it's 1st through 3rd. Not sure if it's the diff or the tranny. I just changed the gear oil in my rear diff 2 weeks ago, and it was a little dirty with some shavings, but not bad. My rear pinion seal has been leaking for over 6 months but I always keep oil in it. hmmm, how could i see if it's coming rom the diff or the tranny?

Put the axle on jackstands and crawl underneath while it's running and in gear.

Ok guys, I might have a lead on this one. When I'm flexing out my rear axle, my driveshaft rubbs against the side of my gas tank... Not good obviously. And I was putting it through some serious articulation last sunday on the trails. Now I'm thinking it may not be the transmission or the diff, but the driveline maybe. Here's a pic of the Driveshaft, where you can see the paint got scraped off when it rubbed.

I was reading my manual and I'm 95% sure it's my u-joints. You guys ever done a u-joint job before?

It's not hard, you can do it with a big vice and some sockets if you don't have the proper tool.
GOOGLE it and you'll find tons of info.

Yea your right. I found a bunch of stuff on it. I'm gunna have to see if my traction bar is gunna be enough to keep it from hitting the tank again. If not, I'll cut off some of the gas tank skid plate.

Is it fine to drive for a while tho? The sound is really only noticeable if you listen close and the u-joint is still pretty good because I tried to shake the driveshaft around and everything was nice and tight.
