Maybe you tranny experts can help me out. I have an ‘04 with around 144k miles. My torque converter is about toast and now the truck is “pausing” before going forward after taking it out of reverse. I have a shop I know pretty well and they sell and install Jasper transmissions. However, for whatever reason they don’t make one for my 4Runner. I was hoping to get about another 3 years out of this car but my options seem limited to a,”used” transmission with no warranty or taking my current one out, fixing the issues and re-installing or getting one from Toyota for about 4 grand. My question is, I see transmissions all over the internet for my car. Are these just rebuilt ones? I’d prefer to get something with at least a 3 year warranty. Any suggestions you can throw my way?

Thanks for the tip— the one this shop found had 124k miles on it which is only 20k less than mine, so for that, I would pass. I guess i’ll Have to shop around.

Mine does this when cold when first putting into drive. After that no issues. Does yours consistently do this? I feel like many others have experienced this as well.

Has the trans fluid ever been changed/flushed?
Have you had a expert check out your trans or are you just thinking it's going bad, has the fluid level been checked?
These transmissions aren't known for going bad so I think you may be jumping the gun, I would check the fluid level if it hasn't been done and if it hasn't been changed/flush I would do that before even thinking about replacing or rebuilding it.

These trans are known to go 300k plus easily.
I agree with checking the trans fluid level.
I have 150k on mine and it is still running strong.
I think you are jumping the gun on needing a new trans.

I can't remember if the 4th gens do this, but on 5th gens the throttle is cut for about 2 seconds after putting it in drive. Whenever I back out of my spot and then put it in drive to go forward, I've got a 2 second pause before the car actually starts going.
Are your RPMs raising during this pause? On 5th gens there is no RPM change, the throttle is just cut completely, you can slam it to the floor and you'll get nothing from the car for 2 seconds.
Is there a pause switching any other gears? A pause switching from neutral to Drive? Does it happen in 4wd Hi, lo, and 2wd?
