So I was just up in the mountains for a week on mainly paved roads. When heading downhill for fairly long runs as I braked, the trans shifted down as I would expect, but as the road flattened out it didn't seem to want to shift back up into 4th or overdrive - even if I blipped the throttle to try and encourage it to do so. If I shifted it into manual and forced it to upshift it did so fine. Admittedly, this is a very new vehicle and I understand that most trans these days have a bit of a 'learning curve' if you will. Is this behavior normal?

Ya unfortunately it's normal. Mine is a 2015 and even though it's had a few years of "learning", it hasn't learned a thing lol. I don't think our tranny's are that smart considering the engine/tranny combo in our runners was developed and introduced almost 20 years ago.

For me it takes a few moments in gear then decides to upshift eventually. Normal

I put a Sprint Booster on mine. It upshifts when I'm coasting almost any chance it gets (also downshifts sooner when merging). Not praising it because it turns the 4Runner into a rolling barrel and I'm certain I'll be wearing through brake pads sooner, but it does free things up. May consider giving it a shot if the transmission holding back bothers you. I have no association with them, just throwing it out there.
