Tranny temp guage question!?

Hey guys I installed my new trans cooler a few days ago and I was wondering I want to be able to monitor my tranny temp for obvious reasons so here comes my questions... if / when you guys installed a temp guage where is the bet place to install it (the sensor) , is there a write-up and or any comments about where you guys put yours. THANX!! :spider:

I have read two conflicting views on where to mount the sending unit. I've heard of T'ing it in right after the cooler--to see how well the cooler is functioning. And, right after the tranny(return line to the cooler) to see the absolute hottest temps of the fluid.

I think it's kind of personal preference. I personally would choose the second option, I would want to know the operating temp of the fluid.

As far as mounting--I haven't done it--but I have seen the pods mounted down in the shifter bezel(which looked god to me) and on the driver side A pillar(also looked good) and I think I once saw one fitted on top of the steering column(it was a digital gauge and looked super cool--but also looked like a lot of time went in to it)

I have mine mounted as close to the transmission as I could get it, which to me, would be the most accurate reading... My father told me to tap it straight into the pan on the trans... I didn't want to do that. He's old school.
 
i have one too, A.wilson013 helped me set up mine, so ours are pretty much the same, ive been thinking about installing a second gauge right after the coolers to see how much im actually cooling...

I was thinking of this earlier as far as the trans pan but didnt feel comfortable doing it as that could cause even more expensive issues later on.

And yeah I was just talking about that. sounds like an awesome idea. prob gonna do that just so i know how well its cooling. I was reading a post from yesterday about going wheeling and how just a air to liquid prob isnt the best for wheeling but good for everyday driving so looks like im gonna have to get another and get a fan but its safer that way.

I would agree that if you wheel quite a bit you should look into a unit with a fan, since you're never really going fast enough to get a good air flow through the cooler. The Kid has a fan on his, I believe... Quite a bit more spendy.

About drilling the pan, a shop would do it for rather cheap I am sure... Especially if you removed the pan yourself. I don't know of anyone on the forum that has done it... I know all of the guys my dad used to race with, that's how they did it.

eh the ones with fans arent really that bad, i bought mine off of ebay for like $110 shipped to my door... its a large cooler with a 10" electric fan that i can manually turn on or off as i desire. im running it in series with a B&M 70624, and a remote trans filter between the two. seams to be working great for me

I followed a couple of the build threads on this site for installing a tranny temp gauge in my console. One of the more useful mods I've done. I get a big smile everytime I look down at while driving, just like seeing the temp and having installed it myself.:cheers:

I work in a shop so welding a bung or even getting to the trans pan wouldnt be hard what-so-ever so not an issue. We will see but as of now im gonna go with TheKids idea of doing one before and after. Just Seems to be better to insure that the cooler is doing its job. Also I know my scanguageII will be here in a few days so I also wondered if there was a line of code for it bc checking the website its only for 4th gens and newer so if there was someone who made a line of code for it I could hold off on getting the manual guage but at the same time the guage looks bad ass and is the most accurate so my brain would probably make me do it anyways..
 
where does the scangaugeII read from? if you have one of those i would not get two more temp gauges, thats ridiculous, i mean the only reason i want to is i wheel a good amount and have armor and also do a fair amount of towing, so i know im putting a load on the trans... i just want to know what my trans is doing and how much im working it, thats the only reason i would do two gauges. if you just want to make sure your cooler is working, i as with the rest of everyone on here, can assure you that it is working. if you still want one before and one after, find out where the SGII reads from and put the aux temp gauge in the other spot then you will have both. -my rig is old enough that the SGII doesnt read tranny temps so thats why i got my gauge
 
Yup, 99+ only for the SG tranny temps.

I have a SG and the temp gauge, they are always within a few degrees. I usually dont display tranny temps on the SG though.

I suppose it doesn't matter which of the two engine choices you have, more importantly is the heavier the load on the transmission (towing a trailer et cetera) would mean a higher temperature being put out by the transmission because it is working harder, right?

I have the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder and the transmission is the 4 speed auto 340. I added the B&M 70268 remote cooler, changed the transmission filter, gasket, and fluid last year. I put in Pennzoil atf and seems to work well. No slipping. There was a fair amount of shavings attached to the magnets placed on the trans pan before I changed oil the filter.

I do not know how long before the fluid was changed. I was the new owner for just a month when I did the work and was told it sat for over a year before buying it.

The topic at hand, though, is placement of the temp sensor. Yes, I plan on installing one as well. I will install mine on the send line to the cooler so I can get as accurate a reading without having to cut a hole in the pan and get a pan temp reading.

I am seriously considering getting a second 70268 cooler and placing it on the drivers' side of the a/c condensor (currently, mine is installed on the passengers' side of the a/c condensor) of course, connecting the two in series. Getting two 9" procomp fans for both too. I can observe the temp and if it gets too high, just flip the two independent switches for the two fans.

One thing: I'm moving, in June, to western Montana. I don't think I'll need more than one cooler, but I'll be towing a 4X4X8 foot trailer there from eastern Virginia. Maybe just a temp. gauge and fan are all I might need. Not a second cooler.

yes your are correct in your initial question. i defiantly dont think the second cooler would hurt, after all you are running the smaller of the two B&Ms, and its not like its that hard to install and remove... as far as the fan(s) goes, i would just do one, you should be fine with just one fan. the only reason i bought a fan is i sometimes do a lot of city driving and traffic can some times blow around here. and doing SAR, i cant always be driving fast enough to get enough air flow of the cooler(s) to allow them to work properly.

Those two wide flat washers are there to make up the space for the ground cable/loop. I tightened the adapter as far as I could and had to have these washers installed or the ground would be very loose. They are 3/8" (.375") inner diameter washers.

I am aware of the fact not too many forum members have the 4 cylinder engine. So, the routing of the conduit will not be ideal for most everybody else on the forum, but for us 'squirrel-bangers', it seems to work.

This large gauge AWG 12 wire comes straight from the positive battery terminal post. It is fused inside the drivers' left foot kick panel with a 30 amp fuse before the terminal block and jumpers.
