tranny trouble

Hello first time poster so i want to say sorry if its wrong i am looking at a 92 4runner with the 3.0 v6 auto tranny with 159.000 miles guy wants a 1000 for it . Only thing wrong with it is when you put it in drive it takes off in 3rd gear and will not shift up or down by it's self. If you start out in first and shift like a manual its dose fine. Reverse feels like its not going into gear all the way what you guys think is it the sensors or the tranny needing rebuilt or both
Any info on what this may be would be great and where the appropriate place to post this thanks alot

This is a fine place to post your question.
First question is what does the tranny fluid look like? that can help establish a baseline for the health of the trans. New fluid is bright cherry red, worn fluid is dark red. If its brown it's past due for a change, and if it smells burned that's a bad sign.
In this case if it's bright red it probably means the seller changed it trying to fix the problem and it didn't help.
It could be a problem with one or more of the solenoids, which is fairly common.

Sounds like solenoids ..... Any lights on the dash? O/D flashing, brake light? As far as the sloppy reverse goes, it sounds like its on its way out.

Is it in decent shape otherwise? A grand seems like good price, used trannies are out there. Solenoids are easy to do.....
