Tranny whine - how long do I have

All of that was changed last September [emoji19]

But what would be whining internally? What about the power steering? My uncles Honda sounds like it has a horrible transmission whine but it's actually the fact that he's too cheap to change his AC compressor.

My wine ended up being the alt. Just saying. Your timing belt kit install it pretty current. It will be interesting what it is......

You could start by removing a drive belt from the PS or Alt and see what happens to the noise

Not whining any more. Good thing I bought a nice jam motor this morning. Wish I knew how to rotate that pic on here

Did you blow the motor?

My boss has a saying about "noises" you can't figure out. He says "give it enough time, it'll show itself".

Good luck either way

Yup, it's done for. I'm only into this year 5 days and this motor is toast, my sons car has cracked block and his molars are coming in. It's going to be a long long year

Not sure what would have failed that would have whined first. I can't say I've read many catastrophic engine failures like rod or main bearings going out but that would be my only guess for yours.

Dang, that sucks

Bringing this post back to life...

My 2000 2wd has a whine only in gear. Whine goes away when off the gas. No whine in N or P.

I ASSume it's coming from the tranny, but could it be something else???

My turn, too......I'll try to get some audio but it sounds like the torque converter from reading the posts in this thread.

Whne/straining noise in gear. It had been muffled by another noise (ancient PS belt) but has been making itself known more and more lately. My son has a busy pre-college baseball travel-ball season coming up and this is my DD, so it's a bit of a problem since I didn't buy any crypto 5 years ago.....

Edit - I'll put the Magnaflow resonator back on to quiet the exhaust for video (it's pretty loud otherwise).

Does the noise go away when you're going highway speeds? (Fast enough for the torque converter clutch to be locked/engaged.)

Mine used to whine in 1st, less in 2nd and 3rd, 1st under any load, 2/3rd under load only.

One drain/fill with Valvoline max life (red bottle) and a couple thousand miles it slowly got to near silence then just normal trans sounds. That was about 40K ago. Luck.

I don't notice the noise at full song (when I presume it's locked up) but I'm also running M/Ts and a fairly loud exhaust so I make a racket......

I have decent ATF (2 recent D/F, so 2 gallons of new Valvoline Full Synth) and the noises preceded and followed it and are getting more pronounced.

My dipstick has always registered a bit oddly. I am starting to fear (well, not really) that I caused a problem when plumbing in an in-series Tru-cool T-cooler and maybe somehow added too much oil? I have been replacing a little less than came out on my 2 recent D/Fs, but it still registers a bit over the Hot line and it jumps all around even though I start up the motor when cold, run through the gears a bit to check the Cold level and check the hot level during a hard drive. I have an extra 1.5 foot loop of hose on the return line to accommodate the location I wanted for a Magnefine, but it's been that way for nearly 2 years. If anything, the AT runs a little cool....just paranoia hopefully, but something is wrong. Probably just Father Time, but a new used transmission is not currently affordable.

I'll link a YT video when I get a decent clip but it''s probably a familiar noise.

So is there a reason to not just change out the torque converter or is that pretty much the same as the entire trans?

Torque converter is not the only transmission component that can cause noise. The transmission pump is the usual noise culprit which requires a good amount of transmission disassembly depending on the transmission. Worn planetary gear sets, slipping clutches, clogged valve body passageways, and bad bearings can also cause noise to list a few things. You can try replacing the torque converter, but if I was going through the effort of pulling the transmission I would replace it with a good used transmission at the very least. In the end it depends on if you want to gamble that it's just the torque converter and that it didn't damage anything else, and how much you value your time.

At first glance, there seem to be a few $500 units out there of dubious origin. The guys in the screenshot below seem to have paid Google as they come up first with various search criteria. I'm not really considering them at the moment, but highlighted a couple of semi-interesting facets of their 'offer'. No core charge either I believe. Just a pretty expensive junkyard tranny that has been washed off and 'inspected' and blind faith that it is from a 72k vehicle. For all I know they are a notorious ripoff - just throwing it out there...

edit - for 'labor' they claim they will pay 'my' shop to R and R the transmission if it fails during warranty. I expected to see a clause about off-roading voiding the warranty, but they only seem to exclude racing. Again, I am not saying this is any kind of deal - just some food for thought and critique!

If I do have to buy something like this one day, I'd rather the seller took PayPal Credit or Affirm for interest-free spread out of cost. Broke AF ATM.

Also, if anyone in the Bay Area has the terrible misfortune of having to total their rig for insurance purposes and the drivetrain wasn't compressed, I'd be interested....

Did both of you drop your pans and clean or change the filter and magnets yet?

I’ve done the drain and fill often enough that hot I drain the pan and add 4qt of atf. I don’t even bother with that stupid dipstick anymore.

Does it whine:

- Stopped while in gear?
- Driving while in L?
- Driving while in 2?
- Driving while in D w/ OD off?
- Driving while in D?
- More/less when accelerating or coasting?
- Change pitch matched with engine speed, road speed or gear changes?

If your trans really does turn out to be bad, I have a 2WD trans sitting in my garage. High mileage, but still working great (removed for my 4WD swap).
