Trans Temps with Bypassing and Using External Cooler

I installed the B&M trans cooler last summer. I tow a 7x12 enclosed trailer. Prior to install I saw above 200 F temps which concerened me. After the install, i hardly ever see over 180-190 when towing.

$60 well spent IMO.
 
- ~5 year old aftermarket radiator put in by the PO
-no external trans cooler
-Scangauge just installed last month
= 255 peak trans temp climbing a long dirt road in 1st and 2nd gear low range (I saw a lot of 220-240 temps on this climb, the 255 was the peak, all at 60 degree air temperature.) So I'll be adding an external cooler very soon!

It's worth noting that driving in low range increased the engine RPM to around 3k for this whole climb, which speeds up the water pump, and more importantly, increases the fan speed significantly. And based on how the engine responds, this RPM must be very close to the torque converter stall speed.

FWIW, I can easily see >220 temp on the freeway on a grade (not towing, but with a load of camping gear), in either 3rd or 4th gear (there is no 5th gear, as someone implied earlier.) In all of these situations discussed in this post, the engine coolant temp was reading 195-200 on the Scangauge.

Thank you! This was the kind of information I was looking for with the OEM setup. I also go camping a lot and I'm loaded down with gear. I sometimes pull a motorcycle trailer into the mountains along with a bunch of gear to do volunteer trail work too. So, I'm now heavily leaning towards a new Toyota radiator and adding an external cooler to bring down the trans temp during times where I'm making the truck work harder carrying heavy loads and also operating in hotter temps. I could save some money buying a less expensive radiator, but an extra hundred bucks isn't going to break the bank, and I value the dependability of better built radiator much more than money savings.

I don't think there's anything wrong with completely bypassing the radiator cooler as long as your addressing the extra cooling needed during more extreme conditions by having an additional electric fans or a second cooler. If you never tow, are never loaded down with a bunch of gear, and don't operate in very hot weather, maybe a stand-alone external single cooler might do the job just fine.
[MENTION=78997]Drcoffee[/MENTION], if I'm remembering correctly, you installed a B&M 70264 external cooler and also added a Magnefine in-line filter. Could you provide me a link or part number to the Magnefine filter you recommend?

Check your coolant temps after a 15 minute drive on the flat and level. If your coolant temps are at 208* that could be your trouble. The PO installed an aftermarket T-stat. Swap it with an OEM Thermostat right away. I found this out when I did my TB and water pump last fall/winter. The aftermarket t-stats consistently run high. I tried two different brands. When I bit the bullet and bought the OEM it dropped to 186*. Thats a 20* difference without stressing the engine.

You can find them on Ebay for $15ea. Just get the ones made in the USA. Frickin chinese ripping off another persons patented product. Pisses me off.

An added perk to buying the magnefine filter is, once you remove it, crack it open and check how much crap you are removing and what the pan magnets arent catching. Then clean the magnet off and use it to hold screws and bolts while working on the truck. They use rare earth magnets and they are strong as hell. I painted two of mine yellow and Green to make them easier to find. Just place it on something steel near by and let it hold your fasteners.

Thanks, I'll probably just install a new Toyota t-stat. I don't think I've ever seen more than 200 on the coolant, but it can't hurt to change it out. (the higher numbers were all trans temps)
 
Lower the coolant temps and you also lower the transmission temps. Thats why I mentioned to check the coolant temps first. But an external cooler is a good idea.
 
Anyone else with an OEM setup and Scan Gauge have some trans temps to share? Ideally temps recorded during times when the truck is being worked hard, like pulling a load, loaded down with gear driving mountain roads, slow moving wheeling up steep hills or driving in extreme temps.
 
I run mine in series with the radiator. I run 125* in winter and 180* in summer. Techically in the designed operating temperature range. If you are concerned about the milkshake , buy a new radiator. For pete's sake, they cost $70 at rockauto.com. What is that? Two frickin pizzas. For you west coasters its probably two nickel bags of weed.

I'm still doing the tranny cooler as here in E TN we don't run into the temp issues unless we offroad or haul. Can't afford to buy a transmission anytime with my mileage.

We can get pizza here for under $20...no weed stores, yet.
 
Since I plan on hitting the mountains next week, I'm going to bite the bullet and invest in a ScanGauge II so I can record some trans temps in different situations. I'll be hauling a bunch of gear and my motorcycle so it should be a good test.

Does anyone have an easy tutorial to follow to set these up for our rigs? I've read I might require to enter special codes to get the trans temp function and other functions that relate to MPG. My truck is a 2000 SR5 4x4.
 
You dont have to go broke on a scan gauge. Use your smart phone with Engine link app. It communicates via wifi through the OBD2 port. The wifi device can be found on ebay for about $30.

And I'm going to try out the Torque Pro app for $5.

For $27, it's worth a shot to see how well it works. The ScanGauge is $160, so that's a decent savings.

If it works well, the next time I upgrade my phone, I'll use my current phone for dedicated scanning. I like the fact that it's bluetooth and I don't have to deal with routing a cord.

Even though I have a 98' 4Runner, which is incapable of providing tranny temp via OBDII, I use it for many other things. I bought an "el cheapo" VM327 bluetooth plugin device off of eBay for under $10cdn, a couple of years ago, and it works fine. Coupled with an old castoff Samsung smartphone from one of my sons, I have a combo that does the job. I found that Torque Pro works fine, and it has allowed me to install the app on multiple phones for convenience. I have a "fleet" of vehicles I seem to be looking after and I've used this on all of them.
 
I just got back from a trip to the mountains to do some brush work, tree work, and mountain biking around a cabin I'm a partner of in the California Gold Country. I was loaded down with gear and pulling a motorcycle trailer. I used the bluetooth OBDII scan tool and Torque Pro to monitor several things while doing the 4 hours drive up there. I was mainly watching my trans temp, coolant temp, and the percent load. I'm guessing the load value is "Engine Load".

Freeway Driving, 65 mph, Flat Road, Outside Temp - Low 60's
Trans Temp - 155 Degrees F
Coolant - 190 Degrees F
Load - 30%

Freeway, 65 mph, Short Hill, Outside Temp - Mid 60's
Trans Temp - 190 Degrees F
Coolant - 194 Degrees F
Load - 60%

Mountain Road, 30 mph, Steep Hill, Overdrive Off, Outside Temp - High 50's
Trans Temp - 209 Degrees F
Coolant - 198 Degrees F
Didn't record Engine Load

Later on the same Mountain Road - It's a long steep climb
Trans Temp - 232 Degrees F
Coolant - 194 Degrees F

Knowing how hot the trans temperature gets when you're pulling a load on a hill, I'm definitely going to go the route of adding an external cooler in series with the OEM radiator cooler. With the temperatures that were shared on this thread by people bypassing the stock cooler and running an external cooler only, it's clear to me you either have to run the external cooler in series, run a secondary external cooler or use electric fans to pull more air over the fins. If you never push your rig pulling loads or going up steep 4wheel drive trails, maybe a stand-alone external cooler is sufficient without anything extra added.

After I get the external cooler installed, and take another trip up into the mountains, I'll report back the temperatures I get.
 
Ok Folks, I installed the B&M 70264 cooler yesterday and replaced the radiator, thermostat and lower radiator hose too. I used the same mounting technique that [MENTION=78997]Drcoffee[/MENTION] and [MENTION=44220]BigFishAllDay[/MENTION] did. I chose the passenger side for the install and routed my lines through the access hole for the air conditioning lines just like [MENTION=44220]BigFishAllDay[/MENTION] did.

I used the long zip ties and installed it directly against the air conditioning condenser with the foam pads between the cooler and the condenser. Since I had the radiator out, I could have just pushed the zip ties through the condenser but I decided to put the zip ties through the radiator as well. I figured if I ever had to replace a broken zip tie, I'd be pushing it through the radiator anyways since I'm not going to drain all the coolant and remove the radiator just to replace a zip tie. I also figured by pushing the zip ties through the radiator, it distributes the carrying load between the condenser and the radiator so all the force isn't applied just to the condenser. I'm not an engineer but it seemed to make sense at the time.

I did my install just like [MENTION=78997]Drcoffee[/MENTION] and ran the cooler In-Series rather than bypassing the stock cooler in the radiator. After plenty of research, including some of the information shared on this thread, it was clear to me the way to go is to run an external cooler in-series. Here's the reasons for my decision:

1) A bypassed system cannot keep the transmission cool enough under extreme conditions (towing, slow driving up steep 4 wheel trails, etc.) unless you go the extra mile and maybe add a second cooler with electric fans controlled by a thermostat. I think many on this forum who have bypassed systems don't push their rigs like i do so maybe a bypassed system is fine for them. I'd rather not see mid to high 200's driving up a steep trail or towing a bunch of gear into the mountains.

2) A bypassed system can keep your trans fluid temps lower than than optimal in cold climates. I'm not in freezing temperatures all that often, but I don't want any undo wear to the transmission when I drive in these conditions. I know the coolers will route fluid back to the trans without sending it through the cooling fins when the fluid is cold but the stock cooler in the radiator will bring the trans fluid temps up to a proper operating temperature much quicker than just relying on the friction in the trans to heat it up.

I know, I'm forgetting about the Dreaded Pink Milkshake. Ok, just like [MENTION=78997]Drcoffee[/MENTION] opinion on this subject, I think the chance of this happening is very very slim. There's so so many vehicles that use a trans cooler in the radiator and it works fine with rare failures. My Honda Accord that I put 240,000 miles on had a radiator trans cooler. No problems. My Subaru Outback with 320,000 miles has a radiator cooler. The radiator sprung a leak and I had to replace it around 20,000 miles ago, but no trans cooler failure. I talked with a service writer at my local Toyota Dealership who's been in the business for almost 30 years and I asked him about this potential problem and he can't remember ever hearing about it. I asked a mechanic I know who's been in the business for 30+ years and owns his own shop if he's ever had a Toyota transmission destroyed by this problem and he said no, but he's seen a few GM cars have it.

Frequenting this forum is great for all the shared knowledge but I also think it can put undo fear for certain problems that get blown out of proportion. But, make your own decisions on what's best for you. I'm just sharing my opinions here and not really looking to debate anyone on the right choice to make.

[MENTION=78997]Drcoffee[/MENTION] is accurate regarding the temperature drop you can see when running the external cooler in series. This week, I drove up a 7 mile mountain road (OD off) before the install and saw trans temps up to the low 220's. I drove that same mountain road today (OD off again) and saw temps in the low 200's. So, you can pretty much rely on a 20 degree drop in temps. Is it worth the money spent and the time to install the cooler just to get a 20 degree drop? It is for me, because I plan on keeping my rig until it implodes and a 20 degree drop in temp, especially when the temps spike during more extreme driving situations, over the long haul could increase the life expectancy of my transmission. I do wonder though if the different tools to check trans temps, Scan Gauge vs a Blue Tooth scanner and using Torque Pro deliver different results. I'd be curious to hear from someone who's run both types if there is a difference.

Sorry for the long read but I had quite a bit to say. I did video this install and I'll get it posted after some much needed editing. I videoed the thing myself which was difficult at times with trying to get proper lighting and getting the camera angle right. It would have been nice to have [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] helping me, but he was working and I was chomping at the bit to get this job done.

I did the same install on Friday. .. B&M 70264 in series with Denson radiator. I also installed a 7" electric fan. I will test my setup later next month in Moab.

My mechanic says the same thing. That said, my radiator started leaking and I was glad to replace it to avoid (hopefully) the pink milkshake thing.

Question though - how many pink milkshake incidents are prompted by heavy off road use? Maybe not may but the jarring and bouncing can't be good for geriatric trans cooler lines in stock radiators.
