Trans Temps with Bypassing and Using External Cooler

The amount of BTU's from both coolers combined will be the same regardless of how you run it. Connect however you want. I went rad then aux. I did it that way cause it was the best routing of hosing for where I mounted my aux cooler.

TRD recommends that the routing be: Trans --> Stock ATF cooler (in rad) --> Aux ATF cooler --> Trans In my opinion, if the routing is reversed, then the cooling effect of the aux atf cooler is negated because the temp of the atf returning to the trans will depend on the stock cooler temp as it is the final cooler in line. although there may be a slight reduction in the heat transfer fromthe stock cooler to the water in the rad bottom tank.

Just reporting in as I noticed I never contributed to this thread before.

Location: Ottawa Ontario Canada.
Elevation: 230 ft.
City established on the bank of a river and spans the valley.
Average Environment/climate/weather:
  • Summer = 55F to 75F & more sun than rain
  • Winter = 12F to 28F & more snow than not

Vehicle:
1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4x4 (4.30 gears w/ e-locker)
265/75R16 Tires on OEM Split Spoke 16" wheels
B&M 70268 Cooler (Bypassed)
Cooler is installed directly against the AC condenser, passenger side.
Autometer Z-series Electric Trans Temp Gauge 2640
Dual Sensor setup
  • 1 sensor as close to trans line out as I could get
  • 1 sensor as close to B&M Trans cooler line out as I could get

Use:
Daily use, no hard wheeling.
No armour or extra weight beyond oem skids

Recorded trans temps (always trans line out temp):
On hottest day of summer (91F), trans temps hit 185F in Stop and Go traffic.
On coldest day of winter (-13F), trans temp hit 150F in Stop and Go traffic.

I know my rig never really sees extremes, but I figured I could still contribute "average/moderate use" data.

For the "regular Joe" in South-East Canada/North-East US, I think there is absolutely no reason why bypassing shouldn't be done, as long as the cooler has a low-temp bypass built-in.
