Transfer case fluid? Best grade?

Guys the transfer case calls for 75W oil. Anybody use this grade if so what brands? Or did you guys use 75w90 Gl5? I understand the main reason for the 75w vs the 75w90 was that it increased fuel economy with the lighter 75w vs the other. Any thoughts on this? The thing is a gas pig anyways. Ive got abit of Redline 75w90 in stock and didnt want to buy a single 75w unless you guys think its needed?

Any opinions are good..

BTW I did use search and search didnt pull up anything on the oil period.. :rofl:

In your full-time 4wd transfer case, I'd use Redline 75w90 even if I didn't already have it on hand.
 
alright.. Redline 75w90 it is.. lets hope the plugs come out easily.. lol

I spend more time under the truck these days then driving it.. still got all the electrics to do. I gotta hurry before it gets cold!! :painkiller:

I used the redline in my diffs and tc last change and seemed to get more gear whine at cruising speed on the highway under no load, or changing from slight accel to slight decel without brakes. From searching it seems I wasn't alone in noticing this. Maybe I and all the others weren't paying attention before, but will be going back to conventional next time anyway.

Hey any links on this? I did a quick search and found several saying their Redline made their diffs seems smoother? Only thing I saw was one person saying it made their motor louder on the lifters etc, using 10w30 redline, which is a bit thick.
 
Great thread. Not to turn this into a "which gear oil is better" thread, but if gear noise is an issue, I've found that Amsoil is the quietest in diffs, trans and transfer cases. I like Redline, Lucas, Mobile1, etc. - they're all pretty good. In my jeeps and side by sides, Amsoil gear lube has always had the least amount of gear whine, even with limited slips and lockers. Just my .02 about gear noise in the drivetrain.
 
In an extreme use case in professional dragracing, we've found Redline Heavy Shockproof to be the best in protecting the Diff gears. I've had no complaints using their more street-oriented oils in my own vehicles.

Im the same, been using Redline since early 1990s. I always found their oil pretty good. Mostly I had manuals so was using MTL and other similar products from them for transmissions.

Guys does increased gear whine from a diff mean anything other than noise and perhaps increased drag with associated decreased fuel economy? Main goal is to protect the diffs from age and wear, I am ok with the noise as long as its not crazy loud. Anybody see any negatives from noise associated with thicker gear oils?

I have a new front diff (dont ask, the horrible thread on how I got it is here somewhere..:lol:) so just want to make sure all is good. I still have the old front diff, just havent found a place to rebuild it yet.
 
It’s not snake oil that Toyota is selling anyone. I once made the mistake of taking bad advice and replaced my manual transmission fluid with one that was slightly thicker than the original since they were out of stock of the factory recommended viscosity. All is fine as long the temperature is warm enough for the lubricants to get distributed evenly at startup in the summer.

Once temperatures dipped below the mid 50’s shifts from first to second there was grinding getting down to my first stop sign. After that it shifted fine for the rest of the trip. Happened repeatedly then when summer arrived again, all was good again.
There’s a reason for the thinner lubricants, they work best in a wider range of temps.

yeah I ended up getting two mini bottles of Redline 75w85 for the transfer case. Ill use the REdline 75-90 in the rest of the stuff. :jump:

Multigrade gear oils
Viscosity of gear oils may be stabilized by polymeric additives (viscosity index improvers). Viscosity of such gear oils is specified at both high and low temperature. These oils are called multigrades and they are designated by two numbers and the letter “W” (SAE 75W-90, SAE 80W-90, SAE 85W-140 etc.). The first number of the designation specify the oil viscosity at cold temperature, the second number specifies the oil viscosity at high temperature.
For example: SAE 85W-140 oil has a low temperature viscosity similar to that of SAE 85W, but it has a high temperature viscosity similar to that of SAE 140.
Multigrade gear oils are used in a wide temperature range.
