Transfer case lube.

We use a 75w-90 GL5 bulk oil (most of the barrels are marked Mobil1 or Valvoline IIRC) for all our differentials.

Used to use an 80w-90 GL5 for the transfer case and rear diffs and the 75w-90 GL5 for the front diffs (something about they had seen 80w-90 foaming up in the fronts so they stopped using it). A few years back we streamlined our inventory (I think getting consistent 80w-90 deliveries and the price going up were the main contributing factors) and just used straight 75w-90 for all our differential services and we have not seen any issues with customer's vehicles in regards to wear or shifting concerns.

I use Amsoil 75w-90 Severe Gear Oil in my 4th gen for everything and it hasn't had an issues in the 70k I have own it for whatever that's worth.
 
Mobil Delvac 75w90 does not have sulfur/phosphorous. The lower # represents its viscosity at low temps; the higher # is the viscosity at high temps. As long as you’ve got the low # without the aulfus/phosphorous, you’re good. 285K on a 2014 confirms this.

It's just oil as many say here. Any oil is enough. Maybe run a couple 100 miles. Biggest issue with that oil for this application, I must say is foaming :(

As for the dealers using it I can easily assume there is a story somewhere where the dealer said "Oh sorry, we were having a cookout frying turkeys and when we told the staff to throw the oil in the rear, he actually used it on your diff gear"

I have had even stranger stories happen to me personally at a dealer.

I'm about to order Red Line MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 and give it a shot.

Anyone else use it?

I've got it in my rear diff. No issues after 25k miles. No quieter no louder. However my OEM fluid wasn't that dirty to begin with at 75k. I trust redline. Plan to do my front diff and transfer w/ the redline products sitting on my shelf. Havent gotten around to it is all.

That's fine for the transfer case. But for a hypoid differential as your rear and front diffs are, you really want a GL-5 gear oil.
 
You may have already seen this. Toyota confirms 75W is specified for gas mileage reasons but 75W-90 is OK too.

If you're referring to me, I'm a former Toyota master tech, and still have friends in the business. It's common knowledge that the 75w in the T-case, and 75w85 in the diffs was speced for CAFE reasons. Same as the 0w20 speced in the USA Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE.

I still have the factory fill in my TRD ORP transfer case. It's the same Aisin VF2A transfer case as was in my '97 SR5. I used 75w90 throughout the ownership of that 3rd gen, and will be using 75w90 when I change the gear oil in my current VF2A transfer case.

I still see forum posts here and elsewhere of 4Runner owners stressing about requiring the 75W and 0W-20, and scouring BITOG for evidence of Toyota’s magical lubrication elixirs.

Toyota doesn’t help the new DIYers feel confident when selecting an engine oil when the owner manuals, since about the 2020 model year, have omitted the oil chart for Puerto Rico that showed it’s OK to use higher viscosities in warmer climates. But they do key on the phrase that you can use 5W-20 but it must be replaced with 0W-20 at the next oil change.

Your advice should be made into a prominent sticky in the maintenance thread.

Toyota specs up to 20w50 in some markets, for the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE.

Which reminds me of another thing that has bugged me which is that Toyota didn't differentiate more in the naming of the Single VVT-i 1GR-FE, and the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE.

They are both 4.0 liter V6 engines, but they share very little between the two.
 
I just ordered Eneos 75W 90 which is probably OEM (with the 85 weight custom made for Toyota) manufacturer for Toyota. Price was great as well compared to what I found at Wally world and other places for Valvoline, Mobil etc.

For the transfer case I did budge and got the OEM Toyota oil in a can!

Now I hate to open that other can just for 0.1 quart for the transfer. I wonder why it comes in a can. Is it so corrosive that the plastic bottles won't hold?

I might have to get a glass jar to store the rest for next time.
 
Yeah, I need to brush up on my oil and lubrication knowledge, a lot changed in the last decade and while I still advocate for using what the manufacturer specifies, I've become less condemning of "grey-spec" alternatives for things like engine oil.

Part of it was some intelligent members on the forums providing very good information/studies rather than just anecdotal evidence and keeping up on what Toyota is doing. Particularly due to COVID supply issues, I found it interesting how much less stringent Toyota became on certain engines and their specified engine oil.

I still haven't found a legitimate replacement for WS, but that also is because I never did find what exactly WS ATF was to compare it with.

Check the can of the Toyota transfer case oil. It should be 1 liter. That’s approx 1.1Qt. That’s the capacity of the transfer case in the owner manual. All you need is one can.

That is assuming I can get every drop of it into the transfer case plus need to check with a litle overflow to be sure. Some loss will be there in any kind of fluid transfer device I will be using.

I agree with you that more on hand is better then less but you are not going to drain every drop from your transfer case as well.

True. I comtemplated buying one can as well. But, what If I messed up and spilled some when opening the can etc... made me buy another one. I got a good price compared to the dealer for around $60.00. Still high, but didn't want to take any chance.

Will store the rest in a air tight glass jar for next time.
