Transfer case oil/lube/gear oil is it being "used" or "getting worn down" only in 4HI and 4LO

Or all the time even in regular 2wd? Kind of like its there the oil in transfer case just sitting there in 2wd, but will start recirculating and really lubing stuff once 4wd turns on...

Yes, transfer case gear oil is only being "used" when front drive is engaged by selecting 4Hi or 4low. On a limited AWD its used all the time, I think you're asking about the selectable sr5/trail/OR/Pro platform

I’ve also wondered the same. Having the lever type transfer case with the ability to disconnect, I would assume the transfer case is active in 2wd, thus your fluid is circulating in the TC driving the power to the rear wheels, which probably is a good idea to drain and fill every 30k.

Now if you were in 2wd with the drive selector in neutral, you are still engaged at the TC, just not the transmission. Or if you were in D but the TC is in neutral, you wouldn’t go anywhere since the TC shift lever is in “N” position. (Don’t think anyone would ever be in the drive position with the TC in neutral, knob type TC selector doesn’t have “N” position, SR5, Limited)

I’m planning to drain and fill the TC at 30k with Ravenol 75w. Most people on the forums that have reported draining their TC at 60k ish seem to have relatively clean fluid, but still shows signs of use. I guess it also depends if you use 4wd often.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong....
