Transmission cooler on V6

Hi all,

My question is this...I just bought an 04 SR5 V6. I drive on the beach in the summer, and I was wondering if putting an a Hayden transmission cooler would be worth it. I know they make a TRD one...but from my readings its just a Hayden cooler with a special mounting bracket...but not worth the difference in price.

Here is the thing...is there some kind of check valve that can be closed in the winter? I live in NY and I know that overcooling the tranny is not good. How do I go about this...this is my first experience with these aftermarket transmission coolers.

Any/all advice would help.

anybody? i checked out toyota120 and found basic stuff.

i went ahead and bought a B&M SuperCooler Automatic Transmission Cooler...the one measuring 11"(L) x 7-1/4"(W) x 3/4"(H) with 3/8" Extended nipple fittings and rated at 13000 BTU (not that I understand the BTU concept lol).

Anyhow, I chose this one vs. the Hayden because of two reasons: plate and fin, and the Low Pressure Drop (LPD) system, allowing extra transmission fluid to bypass the cooler when temps are already low. I live on Long Island and a concern of mine would be driving in the winter with the aux. cooler...i did not want to overcool the tranny fluid.

That's a great choice. I really like the idea of the bypass feature for colder weather.

Thanks for posting this thread. I am planning on installing a transmission cooler and also live in a harsh winter climate so I like you pick. I have the six cylinder and need to pull a boat. Looks like you made a good choice. How was the install? Did you do it yourself, or did you have the dealer do it?

IMHO unless your doing some real heavy towing it's just overkill, and unneeded. It's just opening another path for something to leak.:

That's kind of what I was thinking, but I've got the V6 and my boat would be near the 5,000 limit plus the vehicle cabin load, so I'm on the fence.

Well it would be a good safety choice then. I would just buy really armored hoses with really quality fittings. Make it like it was going on some aircraft.
