Transmission cooler question

Since we're on the subject, I recently bought a 3rd gen 4runner that had the pink milkshake in February at 144k. It's now at 149k.

A new radiator was installed and the system was flushed. Should I still think about installing a new trans cooler or should I not bother?
 
why do you think all new vehicles keep their trans coolers and radiators separate and no longer hose them in the same unit?

This is not a thing, not even for trucks.


another thing to consider here is that the heat will compound on itself, and temps will rise exponentially faster the higher they go and the longer they stay there.

That's not how it works. That's not how any of this works.

No need to bother unless you plan on towing. You may want to start saving for a new trans though, there is no way to know how much damage was done before the flush.

find me a new truck in the last 5 years that has a trans cooler installed in the radiator, as the same unit... maybe vehicles was maybe too generous of a statement but seriously auto makes have been separating them for years. my 04 lexus is a stand along system.

please do explain thermal dynamics then... this has been discussed long and hard in other threads, with real world data as well as lab tested data, and both say it is how it works, so please prove life and science wrong.

How about a 2016 4Runner? The list is long but I'm not going to make it for you.

Ok "thermal dynamics": The heat capacity of any radiator is based on the temp difference, so the hottter it gets the more heat it can transfer. It is the opposite of the run away effect that you described. Science is truth, your post is not.

so youre saying dual coolers is gonna make it too cool? the FSM states that the transmission fluid can be checked at operating temps, operation temp is defined as the point where the transmission will shift into overdrive... that is roughly around 120*. if you think 120* is too cool feel free to stick your hand in 120* water on the stove and tell me its too cold (hint dont try that with oil). i run dual coolers and temps rarely climb above 180* normally, revently its been in the high 90s around here and ive been averaging closer to 180* +/- 10* in cold weather ie snow and freezing rain i only get down into the 150* range. i have never had a problem with the truck not shifting into overdrive. yes on cold mornings it takes a little longer, a couple miles, but by the time i hit the freeway im good. the main reason most of us here bypass the radiator all together is to prevent the pink milkshake -search for it. the only way you can completely eliminate this from happening is bypass the system. why do you think all new vehicles keep their trans coolers and radiators separate and no longer hose them in the same unit? also another thing to consider here is if you link the two together such as is done in stock set up, if one of the two components overheats it "infects" the other... if you are towing a heavy load and heat up the trans it will in turn heat the coolant and put more heat into the system than the radiator was designed to handle. same for the motor, if you start overheating the motor you can quickly overheat the transmission and burn up both. another thing to consider here is that the heat will compound on itself, and temps will rise exponentially faster the higher they go and the longer they stay there.

the system was designed around a stock vehicle with stock tires. bigger tires, aftermarket bumpers, sliders, roof top tents ect. means more work for the transmission and they simply where never designed to handle that kinda load. same goes with the cooling system, and since i have yet to find a larger aftermarket radiator that is not a one off custom made unit for under ~$900 keeping the radiator load as low as possible is also crucial.

Hmmm, where should I start? Ok, first off if you think the operating temp for ATF is 120 degrees, you are mistaken. Optimum operating temperature for ATF is around 170 degrees. According to my FSM, normal operating temp is between 158-176.

Comparing human beings to an automatic transmission. Not a very logical argument. Of course we are going to think 120 degrees is hot. We run at 98.6.

Now I have no doubt you are able to keep your temps down with your dual cooler set-up but I'm having a hard time believing you're achieving 150 degree trans temps in freezing weather unless you're climbing up steep grades. Even with my inferior in-series cooler set-up in warm Summer California temps doesn't achieve 150 for quite a while especially if I'm cruising down the highway. I'm pretty much saying you must be exaggerating a little to say you're able to reach 150 trans temps in cold weather in a few miles. I just did a 15 minute drive, partial highway and partial city streets in 80 degree weather and my trans never got above 140.

As for the Pink Milkshake fear, it's my belief as well as many others that the possibility of this happening is way less than we think. What percentage of the 4runner owners in the world frequent this forum. Maybe .1%. Just a total guess. Somebody reports a pink milkshake and people rush out to bypass the radiator cooler because of it. If it makes you sleep better at night, then you made the right choice. I'm just trying to give people more info so they can make as informed of a decision as possible. I did my research and I chose to replace the radiator as preventative maintenance and decided running the external cooler in-series was the best choice for me based on how I use my rig.

I have seen that when I'm climbing hills in the heat, like I did recently on a trip, the coolant temps will climb a little higher than normal and the trans temps in turn will be higher. Is it enough to be a concern, not really. In the summer heat, my coolant temps run around 190-194. When pushing the rig hard on a grade on a 90-100 degree day, loaded down with gear, I've seen it go up as high as 197.

Now, your assertion that an overheating motor can cause the transmission to quickly overheat and vice versa by using the stock trans cooler in the radiator is probably not all that plausible. Yes, if the engine is starting to overheat, the higher coolant temps will transfer some of that heat to the trans fluid since the trans cooler is bathed in the coolant. And, hotter trans fluid could transfer heat to the coolant. I've heard plenty of stories of an engine overheating, or an automatic transmission overheating but I've never heard of an engine and transmission overheating at the same time.

I'm also having a hard time believing most new vehicles have separate trans coolers but I have no research to back this up. I'm sort of believing you don't have the research to back up your claim as well unless you're an automotive engineer and are in the know.

Anyway, to each his own. You're obviously very happy about the choice you went with, and I'm happy about my choice as well.

Do not disconnect the in-tank oil cooler if you can avoid it. Your in-tank cooler offers additional cooling and helps preheat the transmission. In colder climates the in-tank cooler should never be disconnected from the system.

This sounds like a typical "its not OEM therefore its bad" situation. While I agree, there is always a risk involved when changing anything that goes against the original design/engineering of a manufacturer. But in this case, as long as the external cooler is done properly and your temp is monitored using a gauge, I don't think you have much to worry about. There are plenty of vehicles running around with external coolers without issue, many even came from the manufacturer that way. I'm going with an external cooler myself so I can run a shorter radiator and a higher clearance bumper/front skid plate. I have never understood why toyota hangs the radiator so low in the front under the radiator support. My Tundra was the same way. It might work well on-road but its just asking for trouble off-road IMO.

I'm looking for any info on how to choose the proper cooler. Is there a site that tells you what to pick with the mileage on the truck or type of use that you're using it for
 
When I installed my cooler I researched it very extensively. What I came to the conclusion of is that if you have a daily driver that occasionally sees towing but nothing to extreme go with the 70268 (that's what I settled on) and if your rig sees heavier use then go with the 70264. I have had my cooler for a year and a half and have subjected it to just about everything, large mountain passes in high heat, towing, stop and go in high heat, and i have never seen the temps in the pan get above 185. The difference between the two coolers is so small that it really doesn't matter and you will be happy with either one. Here is a link with a picture of the heat capacity chart for each.

Dude ( I can call you that because you live in California like me), it sounds like you're asking for a definitive choice and it's just not there. Someone might tell you one has worked great for them, but the guy doesn't wheel, tow or do road trips in the mountains maybe like you will one day. So you take his advice and then find you overheat your trans because you're doing some hard wheeling up a long steep trail. Or, maybe somebody says this double cooler set-up is the ticket but they never drive in freezing temps and you like to go snow boarding a ton and find your trans is running too cool when you head up to Tahoe.

From what I've gathered from people who really use their rigs as an adventure vehicle is they choose a cooler at least the size of the B&M 70264 or a little bigger and add a pusher fan that is either thermostat controlled or manually controlled. With the pusher fan, they can keep the temps down when air flow through the front is minimal.

Some come with the fan already installed like this one but they are a little pricey:

FWIW I have the b&m 20268 and drive a mountain pass everyday in temps ranging from 20 below to upwards of 100, have towed a few times, and have been out in high heat in 4 low crawling around and never seen it above 180. I have stock size tires, but it really comes to a pick your own poison. Pretty much all of them will work just fine. Personally I just prefer the b&m because i feel that the design is superior

As someone mentioned you'll have to research and find something you like.

I just installed a Tru Cool LDP 4454.
It's what I could find in my locale. It works great.
There's a number of makes that are similar.

I tow 3000 lbs in town when it's 80 degrees and temps dropped from 230 to 180.
I'm happy with that.

Most any temperature regulating cooler will probably work just fine.

but if you don't know the history of your tranny
either drain and refill at the same time
or the gentle flush, not machine style
or drop the pan, clean, and then flush
