Transmission Cooler & Temperature Gauge Question -- 2008 V8 SE

Webby, you made my day! The last time I checked on this nobody had been able to get it to work. If this works with one of my SG2s then you'll have made my week! I've been using the SG2 since 2008 (I own one for each of my cars) and had the first generation one before that (clunky as it was). I'll go ahead and try it but I have a feeling I'll need to send them in to have the firmware updated. This would be quite a bit easier than installing a thermocouple and a gauge. I may even hook up both my SG2s in tandem since I'm not using the one in my second vehicle.

What is the difference between the ScanGauge E and the II? Both say they can do MPG and EPA readings...I assume the SG II is does what the SG E does and more?

Customer Service at Linear Logic just got back to me and gave me a very sweet deal on upgrading both of my ScanGaugeII units to the latest firmware so I'm going to send them in tomorrow. I continue to be impressed with these guys and recommend the ScanGaugeII without a single reservation.

Got to tip my hat to the ScanGauge folks (Linear Logic). I mailed both of my units Thursday evening after the mail had run that day and had them back the following Thursday in time to set it up for my first serious towing adventure this weekend. I used the code on their website and transmission fluid temp showed up right away. They gave me a sweet deal (rhymes with me) on the upgrade since I have owned ScanGauges for nearly 10 years. Now I have the data that is helping me understanding how my transmission works and how to keep from burning things up (I'm going to have to add an aux cooler for towing AND off-roading if I don't want to see temps above 240F)!

Well... I just broke down and ordered the Scanguage II from Amazon. Two day shipping. Will have just in time for my camping trip this weekend.

I got sick of waiting for the "Torque App" for Android not having transmission temperatures available. I didn't see that it was going to happen any time soon either, so I bit the bullet.

It will be nice to have this installed to be "always on" in my dash as well. I too, will try to report back my feelings after a few weeks of use.

Ummm. I use the torque app with my blutooth obd connecter and it does Trans temp. For some reason it just isnt a dial they have stock on the veiw gauge page. Like adding a shortcut, all you do is add a dial and tell it to monitor Trans temp.

Sorry you didn't know that. My opinion is torque is more feature packed and cheaper. I have an older android phone serve as music and my.data log. I can pull a trip and see a graphical google map of my trip. You click.anywhere and it will show all ypir data there. Great for checking how hills impact your truck.
Personally, I ditched my scan tool for.torque and never happier.

Thanks for that info. A couple of questions arise -- do you have the free or paid version of Torque App? Where do you get a bluetooth OBD connector, and what is the cost? Link would be great if you have it.

This cannot be... First of all, while I know you weren't aiming to sound rude or anything (of course), I must say that I am absolutely not an idiot (at least on this case!)

The paid (and free for that matter) Torque apps are great for everything else and work perfectly. I've tried adding every combination of dials, meters, etc that relate to transmission temps (method 1 and 2) with the paid version on my '06 v8 to no avail. The dial or displays show up for it, but don't report any numbers at all.

One of a few things going on here... Either I effed something up, and am an idiot... Or there's something with my particular truck.. Or you're confusing trans temp with something else... Or my obd2 just hates me.

I've been on the Torque forums and all, and had read that the dev did not have the parameters for Toyota figured out or something.

But I'm assuming you're right here DC, as you always seem pretty knowledgeable. I guess I must try to figure out what I'm doing wrong. If I get it to work, I'm sending the SG2 back...

Seriously, where were you on all the other threads I've posted on regarding the subject when everyone else says the Torque app can't do it. I believe this is one of, if not the first post of someone saying they have trans temp working on a t4r with Torque. Or at least what I've seen... lol

Please point me towards the light...!

Well, not sure what to tell you. The proof is in the pudding.. so here are pictures.

Edit: I have a 2005 v8 4runner.

Works perfectly for me. As you can see, it is not confusing Coolant. I am getting 2 different, and independent readings.

If you are wondering why my trans temp is so low, I walked out and just turned it on to do this. I didn't even put it in gear. Had my truck at idle while I took photos with my camera.


Some notes: Things I did, that I am not sure matter. 1. I ran the PID scan. Not sure if that matters... but yes, as you can see; I am getting data from Trans temp, method 2. I selected units as Degrees. I guess the torque scan part still does C, but it converts it for me on the DASH part.

I did searches over a couple of months or more of transmission threads, and this is the first that I ever heard of the Torque app, and that it could pull trans fluid temp. I don't know why no one mentioned it before in the transmssion temp discussions. Perhaps few know about it. Anyway, I have a Galaxy Nexus. If this works with the Torgue app, I would have never purchased a Scan Gauge. Even so, for the costs involved, I am tempted to buy an OBD scanner and the paid Torque app anyway.

Stanleybb50, please be good enough to report back whether or not you get trans temp working on your Torgue app. And please, what you needed to do to get it to get it to work, if you would be so kind.

To help you guys out, I am wiping my android phone I use for this. It is an off contract, no longer cell service HTC EVO. Your standard android phone. Runs 2.2 I believe.

I am tinkering with it right now. I want to see if I had to install or do anything special to Torque to get access to the Trans data...

Make sure you get the torque scan add on app....

Edit: I just tested. You do not need to do a PID scan (which as I recall takes forever). All you need is: 1. Paid App 2. The Torquescan Add-on (found in google market/play as Torquescan).

3. Start App, set profile. 4. Go into torque scan, you should see Trans Temp Method 2, and it should show data. Mines does, auto. This is off a phone that was completely wiped, fresh install.

DC - you've got me PUMPED to get home and try this out.

I've got the same phone (OG Evo) running Cyanogenmod 7 (custom Rom - which shouldn't effect anything).

I think the ''smoking gun'' will be the plugin. I was not aware of the plugin. I'm waiting for the wife to get here to meet me at the car (her G6) to drive home and test on the t4r!

I give up... At least for tonight. I'll try on the way to work again tomorrow. For now I'm just wasting my time.

Who knows, the adapter I got (same as yours DC) could be defective. It did report I think ''1 fault and like 3 errors'' associated with the adapter unit. That could be my issue. But other sometimes it would say no faults. They only cost like $15 on Amazon, but I don't know if its worth trying...

Maybe I'll just roll with the SC2 when it arrives tomorrow... (If that even works!) Could be my runner not reporting the info for all I know. All other things I'm looking at report themselves perfectly. You can see the coolant from when I first started it below. Not sure why that's the only dial showing ''C'' rather than the ''F'' that I chose and the others show either... But either way, its getting no info in TorqueScan or the real time info.

I get no Faults when I use mine... and I think it is your adapter. When I bought mine I knew that there were several different companies and that they can have issues (cheap Chinese quality control)... I tried to buy a unit with the highest ratings.

This is the one I bought. At 18 bucks, it was worth the quality control issue. I suggest you return and try again.

I didn't know the app could take a screenshot, but it does. Here is data while driving, as you can see, it is reporting trans temp in line with what you would expect.


Finally, the awesome that it allows. I have it record about 9 things.. Coolant temp. Engine Load, Trans Temp, and a few more. It auto records every trip, using GPS. It then overlays that data on google maps, letting me know what is going one exactly where.

Here is a screen shot of it looking at Trans Temp. As you can see it peaked at 154 and hung out in the 140's for most of the short trip.

That's incredible. Now I just don't know what to do... I'm not going through the hassle of returning, but don't want to spend another $18 or whatever. I'm certain its the same one, and I too am a stickler for the reviews. Just bad luck for me maybe...

I want to know my trans temps on my camping trip - leaving this Sunday. I might just go ahead and open my SG2 when it arrives. But like I said, I'll try more tomorrow.
