If you lived in the harsh summer conditions I do in Southern AZ summers, you might very well have a different view. Driving around in 100 degree plus temperatures for 5 months a year, running the AC full tilt of course, and then towing a 4500 lb trailer with the aerodynamics of a barn door from 1000' to 7450' elevation (my favorite summer campground) in 120 miles, will test your equipment to the max.
As I mentioned earlier, as the ambient temperature rises to the summer extremes (irregardless of how advanced today's transmissions and fluids are), I notice more and more broken down vehicles by the side of the road, and the number of failures is correlated directly to the rise in ambient temperatures. A fair number of the failures are transmissions. I used to be a car wholesaler, and was acquainted with car repair people. The transmission shops here stay very busy in the summer. Winter (which is very mild here), not so much.
So yes, I am fond of extra cooling gizmos, and not so fond of breaking down by the side of the road, so I will drop minor change on said gizmos (more's the better). Others might find plasti-dip, for example, a better place to lose their pesoes. But I don't question their judgement -- I like freedom too much.
