Transmission Flush

My 03 4runner has slightly over 100k on it and the dealer recommends a 16 quart flush with filter change. Is this something that should be done? Many old timers say if the fluid is full and appears in good shape, not dirty or burned to leave it alone.

Also I was going to put a slight lift (spacer) on the front struts just to level out the vehicle and encountered the shocks with the interconnecting air / gas lines and I stopped. Can you disconnect the lines or does anyone know the procedure to disconnect and reconnect?

Flushing the transmission can do more harm than good. At the same time, I've heard people say to do it and I've heard others say not to do it. I wouldn't do a complete flush, just drain whats in the case then refill it. That's just me though...

As far as the lift goes, sounds like you have XREAS. You do not have to unhook the lines and I would suggest NOT unhooking them either. When I put my lift on the XREAS was a slight pain to work with, but be patient and the lift will go in just fine.

if you look closely on the dip stick, it says not to change unless you tow. This is written on a sticker, which wraps around the dip stick. I have 130K and mine shifts perfectly, so I am not gonna touch it.:iagree:

I was reading the manual for the 04 4runner the other day and it specifically states that at 100k to inspect the fluid but it is not required to be changed for the life of the vehicle. This is with the World Standard transmission fluid.

The Haynes Repair Manual says to change the fluid at 90k. Not a complete flush but to drain what is in the pan (aroung 6-8 quarts) and also change the filter. This should be done regardless of how the truck is shifting.
