Transmission Issue?

Ok new to me 2010 with 15k miles SR5, part time 4wd, Which I have engaged twice on straight gravel road. Today I was at a light just came to stop fully stopped and then acted like it was shifting down but no rpm change and then a smell of burning transmission that went away after driving a mile or so on highway (I though it was the car in front of me at first but lingered too long to be that). Anyone else every seen this, I am due for oil change and have bumper to bumper warranty for 48k more miles and lifetime powertrain but curious what it could be. Havent seen anyone else mention this issue. If it helps two weeks ago we were on a uphill of highway at 65mph and smell was there but I discounted it as the car in front of me but now I am second guessing as the smell was the same as above. Otherwise the new to me 4 Runner runs great but I have noticed at stops it tends to want to lurch like it downshifts to first late like my former BMW 325xi did but that was a software issue that BMW refused to recall.

Would you characterize it as a shudder in 1-2nd gear?

The smell on the uphill highway is common if the rear window is down (exhaust odor).

I'm unclear of what a full stop acting like a downshift but not means. Was there a clunk? If so perhaps drive line needs some lube?

What do people do with a car for five years and only put on 15,000 miles?
My car had a break-in smell in the engine bay for the first 30,000. Especially after being driven hard.

I'm sure puzzled by a 2010 with 15k on it too, a demo/rental maybe. Dealer's wife's car?

Fortunately, I don't know what a burning transmission smells like, but it doesn't sound good. Oil dripping on something hot? Stuck brake?

I think he has a few things going on but no real problem.

1. He just bought a 4Runner that has had 15K miles put on in almost SIX YEARS. Anything he does is probably going to have a "hot" smell for awhile. It could even be grease slung up against the Cat or exhaust because he smells it when coming to a stop.
2. The movement and clunk when stopping is easy and [MENTION=51186]philsey[/MENTION] so kindly posted a link to the cure.

OP, check the fluids (don't worry about transmission as it is sealed) , crawl under there and see if grease has been slung from driveshaft or if you ran over something and go drive it like you stole it. Have fun.

is there a straight forward fix to this.. mine has done it since day 1 of owning it. i have buddies at toyota which would make the process easier.

It is definitely a thump like its shifting gears as soon as I come to an almost stop like .5mph. I was told the previous owner only used it to drive to church on sundays so I am not complaining. Thanks for the link, I had a 87 Blazer that had axle wrap sound bad so I am aware of what that sounds like, this just seems to come from the front end somewhere more than the rear. I will check grease etc this week.
