Transmissions: Jasper vs. OEM Reman

Got the rig back early from the shop. They received shipment of the transmission from Toyota a day early, so had it done for me Wednesday afternoon. So far all seems good driving it around town. I'll crawl under this weekend and give everything a once-over.

A special bonus of getting my transmission replaced is they did the rear main seal for me at my request. They gave me a photo saying it was "leakin' pretty good". That explains why my steering rack and other things have been soaked in oil. Nice to have that little peace of mind.

Looks like the valve cover gaskets (and half moons) need to get done too. Glad to hear all is well.

Here's to another 200k miles out of it! That was a chunk of change you laid down so hopefully it will be kind and last a long time.

Great to hear this success story. I spoke with Camelback awhile back about this and they told me their Toyota rebuilt transmissions come straight from Toyota parts (as a rebuild) and not done by a local shop then called a Toyota rebuild. I assume all dealerships are that way but I'd always suggest asking direct. A lot of dealerships earn the name stealership.

Soon as the warranty is expired make sure to install a Transgo shift kit.

Interested to Know More

If I missed a post I apologize... I was curious to know more about your experience. Im in the same exact boat and if I were a betting man I'd say we got the same estimate from the same place but maybe not. Sounds like Toyota reman is the way to go hands down.... Just moved to town. I thought maybe I'd have major issues with my Transmission and was hoping that it was something minor but it turns out I need a new transmission. "Internal Problems causing error code P0770" Gears not shifting resulting in neutral.

First question is should I try dumping some Lucas Transmission Lubricant into the mix? Seems too far gone but they claim it fixes all problems...

Also, did you end up going with the original group who estimated the $3900.00 or did you order the Trans from Toyota and get someone else to do it? Not real sure if I should fix my vehicle or not but if I can find a way to lower the price I would be real interested in knowing if you would have done anything different.

Hey man, SO sorry for the late reply - usually I get emails from the forum if somebody replies to a thread but I didn't get one for this. I hope it's not too late.

I went with the shop that quoted me. The shop is Weaver Transmission, kinda northeast of the city. I've got ~1200 miles on the transmission so far and it all seems good to go. I do plan to give it some hardier fluid soon at the recommendation of forum members, but currently, it's running OEM and shifting just fine.

All in it was $3963.36 - if I had a garage and a second car, I likely would've endeavored this myself - would've been cheaper even IF I bought the OEM reman. That said it was financially bad timing and my circumstances led me to have the shop do it. I had them redo the rear main seal while in there and it seems to be holding just fine. As far as I can tell, they did a great job, and had the car back to me in 3 days, two of which were shipping days from Toyota.

As far as the Lucas stuff, I have never heard fabulous endorsements for additives like that, but it's so cheap it almost seems like there isn't any negative to giving it a shot. Either way, it will not fix what's wrong permanently. At best it will gain you some time. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat more about it.
