Travel Cost divided by passengers?

.....
My cousin always hides money somewhere in my truck during the camping trip and I find it sometimes weeks later, lol. I keep mailing it back to him and it pisses him off bad.

Funny. I have a good buddy who's this way. He throws money out his window as he drives off - knowing you have to pick it up. I went to his house once and put it back under his wipers.

Reciprocation is part of that equation

Several of you have posted very generous replies. That's the true spirit of friendship. You take people with you because you're all friends. I've done this many times with friends who always show us a good time. Reciprocation is part of that equation too.

In his OP and several replies, John has described one friend who offered nothing on a recent trip and throws them all in the same lot. These guys invited themselves on not just one trip, but several. They apparently have no gear to share. I like several posts here, but Greg summed it up fairly well when he said riders pay for everything, gas, food, beer, etc. John has $50k in his truck the way it looks in his signature.

I'd commit to one trip as a trial and try it as I suggested above. Let them know early on what the "rules" are. If they buy food and gas you'll feel better about the trip. Bringing all the gear will ensure you're prepared, so that may the plus of being the ""outfitter".

We often visit friends in their cabins and we can not do enough for them. My wife cooks and I clean up. We bring stuff, all of the food if we can. We're going out on a boat next month with family who own a nice motor sailor. We could never reciprocate at that level. We'll try to do everything on that trip and buy them dinner on the way to or from.

Some people just need to be told what to bring. I'm organizing a trip right now for 3 friends. We'll take two cars including mine. The guy who's riding with me will pay for the gas. The trip wasn't even my idea but no one was taking initiative to plan the food. We leave in less than a week. None of them thought about water and there is none where we're going. White Mountains, East of the Sierras travelling through the Mojave Desert. Two of the guys don't know what food to take. One guy has special dietary needs due to his health and the other guy just hasn't given it any thought. The later, unprepared rider is not going to be ready. The way it's going I may end up just bring food for myself and my closest friend who's riding with me. He knows how to plan and contribute. These guys are 65 and older and have all travelled off-road before so it will probably work out fine, though one guy may be going hungry. :wink2:

Thanks Dave and everyone for that matter for the replies. Just to clarify things here a little more me and my group range in age from 34 (myself) to 46 so we are all grown men with jobs and families and responsibility. I, like others in these comments try my hardest to be a people pleaser and to some extent that makes me the one the easiest to get taken advantage of or at least it feels that way sometimes. My trip was supposed to be a solo trip to get me away and enjoy what we on this forum like to do, experience things that those without capable vehicles will never see and get to appreciate, there is an awesome world out there.

I didn't try to start this thread out for you all to think I'm a heartless bastard who wants to be paid, I just wanted to see how you all divide things up or if you don't at all as we are seeing some don't. I am excited to have some company on the trip and think it will be ok. What sucks and it's my downfall was not being able to say "no, this is a solo trip." I do really like my friends though. The part of me that likes going prepared is the part of me that is feeling like the outfitter taking out clients and not me taking my friends along as I simply want everyone to be prepared and not gripe the whole trip if they don't have something. So would you all also eat that cost as well buying more plates, utensils, etc? I know it's cheap stuff but as you all know someone will gripe about having to get this stuff although not intentionally.

I do alright so the money of going isn't the issue as I was going solo initially so I don't need their money but in this case I feel like a common gesture from them to offer would be nice and I've yet to get that and we are leaving in 5 days for 4 days over the holiday weekend. So, I plan on sending out an email with a "recommended and required" gear list for them to have. I'll plan on all the fuel myself and send out a menu for food that will be split 4 ways as I'm just not as generous as some of you guys.

They should definitely offer up some extras... It sounds a little more involved than driving 2 hours up the highway anyway, so they just tagged along. To make it seem fair, maybe split the gas equally but tell the guys to get the food/beer and you've got the rest.

It sounds like a good plan John. You've made a decision. I suggest letting them collect and prep the food in advance. Give them the menu and prep ideas if they need the how-to. Does some of it need to be frozen in advance? Do you need drinking water in jugs from the store (they travel well)?

I always spend quite a few hours preparing the gear for our tips even though it's mostly already packed in a few boxes. My wife preps the food and that takes a lot of work too. If they do all of the food prep, you'll still do more than everyone. And when you get back you've got to put it all away and wash the vehicle. You could ask someone to come over early and help you load the truck. And ask someone to help you clean the truck afterwards. You may not get it but it will drive the point home.

Good luck and have fun.

I don't mind paying for my self-inviting friend when she is hot and fun.... and bring along a couple more hot and fun female friends.... on my wheeling, camping, boating or Vegas trips.... I always have a blast.... :tape:

Totally not minding them not having "the gear"..... I do! LOL

Just wondering how you all divide up the cost when traveling/camping/wheeling with your friends? I've got a few trips coming up with a few buddies that don't own a 4WD that want to go along with me on my next few trips. That being said I'm providing literally ALL the gear needed except food and their sleeping bags and more importantly the vehicle to get them to the places that their vehicles can't. Now I like these guys but am starting to feel more like a damn outfitter than their friend! Is it wrong for me to ask for a little more than just splitting of the fuel and food cost? Like an exta 20.00ea for an oil change or a little more for wear and tear on about 4000 miles total? Or should they the riders be responsible between themselves for the fuel as I'm supplying the vehicle? Just wanting to see how you all typically handle situations like this.

You're in a new 4Runner so your friends think you're rich and don't feel they'll need to contribute anything. What did you expect lol? Sometimes that's how I feel when on trips with friends. Or, Gas, Grass or Ass. I'm in the NH Overland Challenge coming up and one of my friends who is my copilot had this same discussion. We're splitting fuel and food.

. . . I didn't try to start this thread out for you all to think I'm a heartless bastard who wants to be paid. . .

Heartless bastards would never have given it a second thought. I think you've shown yourself to be just the opposite.

It's because you like what we all do so much that wou want them to feel the same way about it as you do. That's a lot of pressure and it's because you care. I sort of go through this when a first timer asks for trail advice when going to an area that I've been to many many times. I want them to have fun and want to go back. With your friends, they may or may not enjoy it like you do. Don't let that ruin YOUR trip. It's a risk THEY choose to take by going on YOUR trip. So, keep it in mind and have a blast in the San Juan's.
