for volunteering to sacrifice one of your filters (you could just wait until you have a used one.) I'm sure we're all curious to see what could make this better than just the size. Cut on the outside diameter of the "tin can" right next to the mounting flange (there are some excellent pics of this done in the thread that is linked earlier/above by bryancos.
The dealer did my 1st change not to long ago. The factory filter was the -20004. They put on a -YZZD3. I haven't seen a -YZZB5. Can anyone answer what someone asked earlier: is there a difference in the size of D3 vs B5?

Other than the size, it looks like a standard filter to me, The filter media doesn't look like anything special.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the TRD, but honestly I'm more impressed by the OEM filter. The synthetic organic filtering media is some really cool stuff that you don't even get from such quality filters as Mobil 1 or apparently the TRD.

After looking at that filter I would have to figure this

-If you drive hard (thus having a use for the extra flow capacity) or would like to extend your oil change intervals, I could see an advantage with the TRD.

-But if you just want to maintain the upmost protection of your engine, without having a need to depend on any extra oil flow (outside of manufacturer specs such as would be required with a supercharger, etc), the OEM filter is my choice.

i have a question...with all the different model numbers of the OEM filters being thrown around, i am confused. are the different numbers just different in their sizes? or are they different quality OEM filters too?

Threxx if you are talking about the stock Toyota filter that was cut open in those post like the 20004 and yzzB5 those are made in japan and you can't get them at the dealer. I don't think anyone has cut open up a yzzd3 yet. so it might not look that the 20004 or yzzB5. The new replacement for the 4R is the Yzzd3 and it made in Taiwan..Those you can get at the dealer.

I thought I saw a D3 cut open at the clublexus.com forums, but maybe it was a B5 instead? Anyhow... I'm not too awfully worried yet since I have 14 20004 filters in my garage right now.

OK still though, I would like to see a yzzd3 filter cut open if I haven't already, since that is, if I'm not mistaken, what I will need to buy for my fiance's 4Runner?

Please do not tell me that you're implying you simply threw your motor oil saturated oil filter into the regular garbage. I cringe to think you are suggesting that you sent your oil filter to a land fill so it could leak motor oil into your local water supply! My local hazard waste center takes oil filters along with motor oil.

LOL! I had the filter laying in a flat oil pan for 2 days where it drip every single drop of oil in it out before i double bag it in blue recyclable Walmart plastic and toss it in with the trash.

Since I can't fit the big TRD oil filters on my V8, I have found a good Amsoil alternative. I just bought the SDF-34 filter. They are the same width as the original filter, but nearly twice as long. So, I am getting the additional filter area, in a different shape.

I found an M1 filter that was twice as long as the OEM Toyota filter, gonna use it on the next change.

Im already putting 7 quarts in, I'll see if I can get 7.5 or 8

This is a little off topic, but I didn't want to start a new thread.

Anyway, I changed my oil and put too much in. The oil extends beyond the two points on the dipstick. Is there anything I should be concerned about? It'd be troublesome and a waste to drain it all again. Thanks!

Here is a photo of the big TRD filter, another TRD filter that is the same size as stock, and the Amsoil filter.

I just read that the Amsoil filter has a anti-drainback valve like the Toyota filters, but do you know how much pressure the Amsoil filters are rated for?

I know the Toyota filters are rated at 60 lbs, and a lot of competitors are rated at 40 lbs.. Or at least thats what the guy at the dealer said, that the Toyotas need 60 lbs of oil pressure and have had some cars roll in to service because the aftermarket filter blew.

TKR, it is worse for a motor to have too much oil than too little, but it'd have to extend pretty far past the dip stick (more than an inch or so) before I would even consider draining. Heck... why don't you just pull the drain plug out for a second and then plug it back, or pull the filter, dump it out, and put it back on depending on how much you need to drain (pulling the filter won't drain very much but may be a little less messy).

At the very least I strongly recommend against full throttle high-RPM acceleration or towing large loads, as they will cause your oil pressure to rise, which is the only conditions that would allow an excess of oil to cause a problem.

I don't have my 4Runner yet, but what is the recommended amount to put in this motor? That sounds like an awfull lot. There is no good reason to add any more the the amount specified in the manual unless you are using a larger filter and in that case you might add an extra .5 quarts, TOPS.

tkr128 I don't think it's a good thing to over fill you oil. To much oil and your motor will start to burn the extra oil and leave deposit/ gunk in your motor. Just unbolt the drain plug for 1 to 2 sec. check it again to see it it at the top notch.

The V8 takes 6.5 but it reads low on the dip stick so I added the other .5 on the advise of tundrasolutions who has many guys who put 7 in
