TRD Pro Clunk

So far I’ve noticed a cold weather clunk in temps below 30 degrees. Should it be fixed? Absolutely! Is it annoying for a brand new vehicle to have something like this? Absolutely! Just like any brand of vehicle when you buy the first edition (not 5th gen in general but the TRD PRO model) there are bound to be bugs.

Do I think this makes the vehicle drive a POS? Nope. Maybe if I raise my pinkie when I drink my alcohol, or get upset when Jeeves forgets the warm my slippers when getting my paper in the morning I may think it rises to that level, but I live in the real world where shit happens.

Here's to living in NE where the cold weather is almost over and entrusting that Toyota will have this taken care of by the time next winter comes. Other than that I won't miss any sleep over it......... especially if Jeeves keeps serving my cucumber water right before nap time.

Some of you guys got me all wrong! My intent was not to come on here and offend anyone or bash the trd pro 4runners. I am truly sorry that's what happened. I am a vehicle enthusiast myself. I do not own my own trd pro 4Runner but if it suited my needs I defenitely would it has to be one of the sharpest looking suv's you can get straight from the factory. Since there is a trd pro 4Runner in my driveway that I will be maintaining modding and caring for like it's my own I consider myself a 4Runner enthusiast.

i was just reading through and thought i might chime in, could it be coil slap? I heard the trd pro had springs with a lower rate but gave more lift than the stock, which means they would need to be longer and the coils would be closer together. in the third gen section some people had a similar clunk after installing some superflex coils, the coils were slapping together over speed bumps. the solution is to add a sleeve over the bits where it slaps, although it does no harm leaving it alone if that is the problem. the superflex coil is a dual rate coil, so when at ride height there is a stack of coils on top that touch eachother, and they can slap eachother. if this is the problem it could be tested by a dealer ship by having them swap out the coils for te coils. or you could fashion a sleeve with a big shrink wrap and slide it over the coil, then hit it with a heat gun.

I referenced the PM'd TAS# (thanks again [MENTION=115475]TRDPRO[/MENTION]) to have them take a look at my 4Runner and see if they could make any helpful observations leading to a cause or solution.

Unfortunately today in MD the temperature was well into the high 50's by the time I got to take a ride with the Service Tech. I could feel the clunk but he couldn't. Granted the warmer temperatures made it less noticeable. Additionally, he owned (and showed me) his 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with 35" tires so that gave me some insight into the ride quality he was used to (lol). On a side note he loved his new Cooper S/T MAXX tires, said they were the quietest he ever had for off-road capable tires.

Kidding and ribbing aside, since it wasn't cold enough to really make the clunk come out pronounced there was nothing done to fix it. He suggested a few items like it could be the bushing material used or that the harder shocks could be the cause. Even sway-bars were suggested. I got tired of explaining all of the things tried on this forum and my own observations and just let it go realizing the problem was not going to be resolved at this dealership in MD or by me this time around.

At the least my truck is another one added to the list getting to TMC as an unresolved observation. More complaints should be getting to TMC so more effort from Toyota will go into finding a solution...or a blanket statement of "just live with it, nothing is wrong".

Good point I guess just watching this forum and waiting for a fix isn't helping anyone. I will contact our local dealer about the girlfriends truck and try to get something rolling.

Now that we have a second member (wink,wink) that is disappointed with the ride quality, I'm curious what exactly makes it a pos. Considering it is a factory prepared off-road vehicle, I find it to better than expected.

I'm just upset with the clunk issue its still an awesome truck. I have a service appointment next Friday it's the soonest day I could get a rental. I keep everyone posted!

I understand being disappointed with the clunk, but don't understand how that translates to "ride like a pos".

Okay, so I'm now getting the clunk sounds from both sides of my front end suspension since having the TRD Pro.suspension installed.
Took it I to the toyota service.dept and they were able to duplicate the issue so they went through all the check list of a new suspension Install including the LCA bolts...and we're unable to pinpoint the issue but wanted to keep my truck for a.few.hrs and Continue to troubleshoot but I am rescheduling for next week since I didn't have the time today to hang at the dealership. Anyhow add another to the list of people with this issue.

Toyota is in the process now of testing the PRO suspensions, as well disassembling and testing the PRO suspension components. Hopefully the engineers have an answer and solution soon.

the clunk

I had my 4runner in for its first service today and to also check and document the clunk. I did not have a chance to talk to the service tech because my 4runner was brought back to me by my friend that works there and is part of the family that owns the dealership. I gave him back his Tundra for my 4runner. Anyway he said the tech verified the clunk and had also read up on the internet about it some. He said that there is a bushing or bushings that will be replaced based on what Toyota told them to do. I'm going to try and talk with the actual tech tomorrow if I can so this is all I know third hand. I'll check the actual work order when I get it from my buddy because to be honest I don't have it now and I like to keep those things for my records. Based on the above post and what I was told I do believe Toyota is working on this issue. Will bushings solve the problem, idk. I will report back if I get a chance to talk with the tech. My buddy also has a TRD Pro(for his wife) and said that he is going to have the same service done to his after mine gets done.

This is why I wanted to talk with the Tech myself. There is no fix at this time. They are aware(duh) of the issue and are working on it. The more people complain the faster it will get resolved probably. He apologized for the mix up and said the parts on order is the front fender trim kit that I do not want done so they won't be needing that kit. He did feel a slight clunk or noise and he does understand that for some reason it is worse when its cold. This is where he mentioned the bushing material to my friend. Mixed up story starts there. Unfortunately it won't be cold here again for 7 or 8 months, lol. Anyway, at least its documented on my work order. Sorry for the misinformation. Hope this post makes sense, haven't had my coffee yet.

taking in for service again today

well I'm taking my car back in today and we'll see what they find. I don't have high hopes of them finding what the issue is but none the less I'm willing to sit in their service area waiting room for several hours to find out that they've made no progress. I will update everyone later with my outcome. I apologize for my pessimistic view of what I believe the service department won't find but it seems to be par for the course at this point. Here's to hoping I'm a totally wrong and will soon be eating crow for my statements above. Fingers crossed.
Btw, my clunk has become more pronounced as time has gone by. It doesn't matter if the weather is warm or cold outside.

UPDATE: yeaaaaah...Nope. They couldn't pinpoint the cause of the clunk, even though they could duplicate it when driving. Sooooooooo, they are opening a case with Toyota and will contact me when they have a schedule for the Toyota Tech to look at my vehicle and a case number to go with that. Wish I had better news. Anywho, at least they fixed my whistling side mirrors TSB, oh and they scraped my drivers side door pretty good too, which was taken care of with some Zymol. Hope someone solves the clunk mystery sooner than later.

Well I brought my pro in last Friday and asked to take a ride with a tech. He recognized the clunk even though it wasn't that bad due to warmer temps. Later that day I was told my truck was all set. They checked all suspension component and everything looked fine. Not happy with that response I told them what I've read on here and how other owners had cases opened with Toyota. They said they would check into it for me. Tomorrow will be a week I haven't heard a thing. I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow been too damn busy this week to follow up. So I guess no good news yet.

I had a deal almost done on a Trail Premium and saw a TRDP make a left in front of me and that sealed my fate.

Sorry, I have white TRD Pro 12/14 build and live in FL. The temps didn't get below 40 by the time I purchased it. I assume the clunk is more present around freezing based on the posts here. Hopefully a TSB comes out so all can get a fix even those living in southern states.

The TRD guys are suppose to be meeting with Bilstein guys from what I understand to try to pinpoint the issue. If I hear anything else, I will let you know.
