I thought since the TRD Pro thread has become 153 Pages+ long I'd break this topic out.

Finally received my TRD Pro. Ended up making the tough decision of going white over Inferno.

I noticed some of you have a "clunking" sound coming from the front of the vehicle when going over bumps.

Turns out I also have the clunking noise.

Was curious if anybody made any progress to figure out what's causing it.

If anything I figure this thread would be easier to track and post updates rather than digging through the TRD Pro "holy grail" thread.

Maybe this is a bilstein thing... I noticed a clunk with my suspension.
 
haven't noticed anything odd with ours and have been running gravel/backroads. feels better than our previous FJ so I'm not noticing anything that seems out of the ordinary. What sort of ride did you have prior?
 
This is just a guess from my experiences. It could be the coil-over spring becoming unloaded over bumbs. I know that on race cars with coil-over setups the spring is unloaded when the wheel is off the ground and the spring can be wiggled/moved within the confines of the perch. I just went into the garage and verified this on a coil-over suspensioned car I have in there (haven't tried it on the TRDP yet). This is not an issue with traditional coil springs since they generally sit compressed in the perches when unloaded. Just throwing it out there.

I haven't followed the other clunk thread you talk about but have you made sure that the skid plate is not loose at all?
 
If you are completely stock then I concur with Bimrunner.


I have had and corrected 2 owner induced clunking situations on my 4Runner so I have Googled clunking numerous times. My clunks were related to LR UCAs and low pressure in the KDSS. And I believe neither apply to you.

Know what you mean with coilovers...I have Bilstein PSS10's on my other car and the "helper" springs can occasionally make noise on non-compliant road surfaces.

My understanding is that the TRD Pro suspension is a single spring/shock design (no helper spring involved). However going back to what you mentioned, maybe the extra shock travel extends to a point that the spring becomes unloaded and has the ability to move around.

I'd be surprised that a manufacturer released a spring/shock design to the general public (albeit a limited release) that makes a clunking noise, but I also seem to learn something new every day.

I haven't followed the other clunk thread you talk about but have you made sure that the skid plate is not loose at all?

I did the "kick" test and didn't hear anything. Going to try to get under there later to shake it around.

It is better if you put a ratchet on it or even remove it completely and see if it still clunks. If not, it has to do with the skid. It is a fast and easy test.

If you are stock and you have not modded it yet then, it goes to the Dealer for warranty work. I had a bad UCA on a Tacoma once and they replaced it and the clunking stopped.
 
Someone with a TRDP needs to mount a GoPro to the front sway bar and go find some bumps so we can see/hear the clunk,

I have had my 2015 TRD pro for about a month now and the clunk is very apparent. I had a 2012 SR5 and had outstanding luck. It had no such dull clunk. Just come back from dealer, took mechanic out to show him "clunk". He rode in front seat and acknowledged "clunk". He said he could feel it on the floor with his feet. They took car into service area and checked it out. They said it was fine. Could this issue be too new, since these are the first "PROs".

Same thing here....Took mine in and had a master tech drive it. He acknowledged the clunk, put it on a lift and only did a visual inspection and checked the torque of the suspension components. He seemed to think everything is ok, but I disagreed and had the service writer annotate it in my service jacket. I intend to jack the 4runner up at home, and hit the tires on the bottom with a dead blow hammer or mallet to try and replicate the sound.
 
Same issue here. Was in for service all day yesterday. They called me to ask me who put in the suspension, lol. I knew that was not a good sign.

Techs acknowledged hearing the clunk but found no obvious cause. Retorqued everything underneath but still no improvement. They had no loaners available so I had to take my 4runner back. I plan on dropping it off again and leaving it until they fix it (when they have a loaner).
 
I'm no shock/strut design engineer but reading through this thread and others about suspension clunks on radflo setups recently makes me think the noise is coming from the inside the shock when it goes from compressed to full droop rather quickly (like over a speed bump at any significant speed). In this scenario, the fluid has to move from one side of the piston through the orifices to the other real fast and when that happens if the shock internals aren't correctly designed you'll hear a clunk, either from component contact or more likely the clunk is really a hydraulic lock sound that occurs when the shock is trying to push more fluid through the orifice than can fit in that amount of time.... once again, no expert or design engineer here, just my guess the clunk will never go away until you replace the bilstein shock something like an icon that doesn't exhibit this clunking behavior supposedly.

If this is indeed the case, it's sad Toyota overlooked this in it's suspension component selection for the TRDP. Then again, it's also sad they missed the rubbing issue on the front fender. I mean, did they even test drive this thing before production?! If they did even for 5 minutes they would have surely experienced both these conditions and realized it's not acceptable for production on a 45K SUV.

I think for most of us, the sound is most pronounced at speed around or less than say, 10mph. I notice it most on gravel driveways or roads, grassy fields etc. Once the speed increases, the sound goes away.
 
Most vehicles that I have rode in that replaced the stock rubber strut mount bushings with more solid or metal bearing type bearings in the new strut assembly clunk when going over big bumps. I do not know if the pro 4runner uses the stock rubber end bushing or a more solid bearing though. You lust get more of a metal on metal sound that is soaked up with the more common non pro setup.

There have been several threads on suspension clunks ranging from only TE's with KDSS to all 4Runners making a slow left turn. Now this thread on the TRD Pros.

I have refrained from getting involved in these threads (except in the KDSS one because they were going down the way wrong path) and truthfully I really do not know why people have clunking suspensions.

In some threads they say it only happens when it's cold. In other clunk threads it's only one model of 4Runner. Still other threads list only specific instances (ie speed bumps, left turns, etc) when they hear the clunk.

Here is what I DO know:
It IS NOT the hydraulic fluid in either the KDSS system or conventional suspension shocks. While Nate's idea has merit, hydraulic fluid will either hiss, whine or groan when subjected to unusual operating parameters. Not clank or clunk.

If the noise is a muted "CLUNK," it quite often is coming from a bushing or a component isolated with bushings because the bushing is dampening the sharp "CLANK!" sound that comes from metal hitting metal. A worn out shock is a good example of a component that makes a clunk because it is isolated with bushings.

If I were you guys who have this noise and you really want to solve this issue you must do some of the leg work yourself. Taking something like this to a mechanic without having a specific idea and location of the issue is iffy at best. They are not going to put in the time necessary to troubleshoot it if it is a random and part time noise. After reading about the many trips to the dealer and having the issue unresolved tells you something different needs to be done if you want to get it fixed.

The idea of mounting a GoPro under there is a good one but you still have to know some other things. For example, if the noise only happens when it's 30 degrees or colder then that weights the issue towards something that is influenced by temperature.

I would:
Take an hour or so to run some tests like
1. Slow abrupt left and right turns.
2. Hitting speed bumps perpendicular and angular.
3. Pothole tests.
4. Reverse turn tests.
5. Hard braking tests.

Try these tests in certain conditions, like cold, dry, wet, hot, etc, and DOCUMENT the conditions of the test!
Once you have identified which maneuver and condition required to make a repeatable noise THEN you can mount a GoPro under there (multiple tests with camera/mic mounted in different locations to triangulate the noise) and see if you can identify which component/bushing/joint is actually clunking.
After you do this then you can go to the dealer with confidence and point to a specific component/bushing/joint and tell them "Hey. This makes a clunk when I do "X" in "Y" conditions. Replace it! They will do so without fail and this should solve your problems.

I know this is not what you guys want to hear but difficult problems usually require a lot of time to solve for the solution. I'm pretty sure once somebody does the outlined process above there will finally be a solution. Until then, there will just be more threads on this subject with no resolution. Good luck and I will be happy to advise.
